IIM Jammu PhD WP FAQs
Ques. How is the PhD WP different from the full-time PhD at IIM Jammu?
Ans. The Ph.D. Working Professionals at IIM Jammu is a part-time programme designed so that candidates continue their careers while pursuing doctoral research. Unlike the full-time PhD, it does not provide a monthly fellowship stipend, and candidates pay programme fees. The full-time PhD has an age cap of 40 years and is fully funded, whereas the working professionals version has no upper age limit and is intended for those already in senior roles in their organisations.
Ques. What work experience is required to apply?
Ans. Candidates must have a minimum of 3 years of work experience at the supervisory or above level in government institutions, autonomous bodies, research organisations, PSUs, educational institutes, or private companies. This supervisory threshold is evaluated during shortlisting and at the personal interview stage. There is no upper age limit for applicants, making the programme accessible to experienced professionals at any stage of their career.
Ques. Can I apply without a CAT score for this programme?
Ans. Yes. Candidates without a valid CAT, GMAT, GRE, GATE, or JRF score may appear for IIMJ-RAT, IIM Jammu’s in-house research aptitude test. This makes the programme accessible to experienced professionals who have not recently appeared for any standard entrance test. Those with valid scores from CAT, GMAT, GRE, GATE, or JRF must ensure the score was obtained within 3 years of the application deadline.
Ques. How are classes conducted for working professionals?
Ans. Classes are offered in both online and offline formats to accommodate candidates managing full-time careers. Remote access reduces the need for frequent campus visits during the coursework phase. However, final examinations are held on campus at IIM Jammu, and scholars must attend residential components including workshops and research review sessions as scheduled. The structure is designed so professionals can balance doctoral work with their current roles without interrupting employment.
Ques. What specialisation areas are available in this part-time PhD?
Ans. The programme offers 8 specialisations: Business Communication, Business Policy and Strategy, Economics and Business Environment, Finance and Accounting, IT Systems and Analytics, Marketing, Organisational Behaviour and HRM, and Operations and Supply Chain Management. Business Communication is exclusive to this part-time programme and is not available in the full-time PhD at IIM Jammu. Once admitted, candidates pursue their doctoral research exclusively in the selected area and cannot switch specialisations.
Ques. Is any financial support or scholarship available for this programme?
Ans. This programme does not provide a fellowship, monthly stipend, or tuition waiver like the full-time PhD. SC/ST, EWS, and OBC-NCL students may be eligible for fee relaxations as per IIM Jammu’s reservation policy. A refundable caution money deposit of INR 44,000 is collected at enrollment and returned after all dues are cleared on programme completion. Many candidates in this programme receive support through organisational or employer sponsorship arrangements.
