IIEST Shibpur, Howrah - community

Guys I am going to pursue btech metallurgical at iiest shibpur but I want to pursue my career in ai. So is it feasible to study? And will the tech companies recruit me if I have the same skill as that of a student who has a cse degree?

Firstly a little background on me. I am a 2024 pass-out. I was amongst the state toppers in my X CBSE with 98.8%. I have done my schooling from DPS Ruby Park. I got 94.6% in XII CBSE (PCM Computer Science). My father had passed away from blood cancer while I was appearing for my board exams and my jee didn't really go well. I got into IIEST Shibpur Civil Engineering in 2024. I am really interested in Computer Sciences so I thought would be able to change my branch. I missed 3 of my 2nd sem exams for dengue fever and they won't allow me to appear for the branch change. (1st Sem SGPA 8.6/ would be able to easily get a CGPA of 8.8 if they allow me to sit for the exams before branch change) Since I had to study for my college, couldn't really focus on JEE, but can get into ECE, IIEST Shibpur and start afresh. I request your help in choosing what I should be pursuing now, CS in newer IITS like sonepat, kottayam etc..( I do have financial constraints) or ECE in IIEST Shibpur (can i pursue MS in CS abroad?) or Civil Engineering in IIEST (would save my year/can I move into CS later?). I just want to remind that I am really into computer science and have good knowledge in Python, DBMS, OOPS, HTML, CSS, JAVASCRIPT. My peers whom I mentored once are targeting the FAANG so there is that FOMO.

I am 2023-2027 batch student. I was allotted ME branch in a tier 2 central university engg college. I had plans to upgrade my branch to something else but I couldn't due to bad marks. Have been an average student till class 12th then took a drop for an year for college entrance but couldn't crack jee so went to univ college and since then have only downgraded. In the first year itself I got two backs due to personal health issues. In 3rd semester I passed all but in 4th sem I got three backs by 4 marks recently. I have already cleared one back from 1st year and now total i backlogs I have are 1 (M2) from 1st year and 3 from 4th semester. Now I am in 5th sem 3rd year and I can only give my remaining backlogs paper in even sem (6th or 8th) but it's gonna be hard probably to pass all in 6th sem as there going to be 9 subjects including 4 labs. Other than this, except my lab courses, every theory paper except a very few, i have really bad marks in theory papers mostly with D or C and overall CPI is 5 currently after all the backlogs (since marks don't count for backlog subjects at all) My problem are I'm really not good in my branch and jobs in mech are tough unless you have a really good academics history or knowledge of subject. I have concluded I'm not good in studies and at least not for engineering particularly for my said branch. I am just looking to complete the degree now without any gaps. My questions are is it possible to overcome this situation some way better? Like I'm going to try to clear as much as backlogs in 6th sem and trying to score little better in all 4 semesters from now but is there anything else I can do? Also, I know it's bad to ask this question after all, do I still have hope for placements? Particularly I might go into tech role jobs since some CS related companies take mech graduates too but with this performance, are there any chances? A lot of money (according to my financial limits) has been spent for the course and the outcome is like this all because of my mistakes.. I want to recover this for my parents now though as I had planned to get a job before joining btech so anyone of you if you have passed through such stage or could give advice for the same, I would be very thankful to you! P.S: you can all let me down so I realize my mistake even more but pls give some advice, I'm really depressed from a few days because of recent results.
