SNU Ph.D. Chemical Engineering FAQs

Ques. Can I pursue the PhD Chemical Engineering (Part Time) at SNU while working in a company located in Delhi or Gurgaon?

Ans. Yes, you can, provided your workplace is within 100 km of the SNU campus in Greater Noida. Delhi and Gurgaon both fall within this radius. However, you must obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your employer and submit it along with your application. The NOC is a mandatory document for part-time PhD applicants and incomplete applications without it will be rejected. You should also ensure your employer is aware of the periodic campus visits and written exam/interview requirements.

Ques. Is GATE mandatory for admission to the PhD Chemical Engineering program at SNU?

Ans. No, GATE is not mandatory. The official admission announcement clearly states that a valid GATE score is "desirable but not mandatory." Candidates without GATE scores are also considered, and the final selection is based on the merit of the application, written entrance exam, and interview. However, having a good GATE score can strengthen your application during the shortlisting stage, especially when competition is high.

Ques. What is the minimum duration to complete the part-time PhD at SNU, and can it be extended?

Ans. The part-time PhD program at SNU is structured over 5 years. However, completing a PhD within the minimum duration depends on research progress, thesis submission, and evaluation timelines. Extensions beyond 5 years are possible but may involve additional fees. It is advisable to clarify the extension fee structure and policy with the department before enrolling, as extension costs at private universities can be significant.

Ques. Do part-time PhD students get access to the same labs and research facilities as full-time students?

Ans. Yes, part-time PhD students are affiliated with the same department and have access to the research laboratories and infrastructure at SNU. The department houses several advanced labs including the Microfluidics Lab, Biomass Conversion Lab, Polymer Materials Research Lab, and Computational and Theoretical Soft Matter Lab. However, since part-time students are not resident on campus full-time, lab access may need to be coordinated with the supervisor and department schedule.

Ques. Is there any financial support available for part-time PhD students at SNU?

Ans. No institutional financial support is provided to part-time PhD students at SNU. There is no stipend, no tuition fee waiver, and no teaching assistantship for part-time candidates. The total tuition fee payable over 5 years is Rs. 5,50,000, plus a one-time admission fee of Rs. 25,000 (non-refundable) and a security deposit of Rs. 25,000 (refundable). Part-time students are expected to be self-funded or supported by their employer. Some employers in the R&D sector do sponsor PhD programs for their employees, so it is worth exploring this option with your organization.

Ques. What research areas are available for part-time PhD students in Chemical Engineering at SNU?

Ans. Part-time PhD students can pursue research in any of the active research areas of the department, subject to faculty availability and supervisor consent. Current active research areas include sustainable aviation fuel production, hydrogen-rich syngas production, process intensification of polymerization, nanomaterials synthesis and catalysis, biopolymer-based coatings for food packaging, carbon dioxide capture and separation, high entropy materials for energy applications, polymer membranes, microfluidic device development, and computational modeling of responsive materials. The choice of research topic is finalized in consultation with the assigned supervisor after admission.
