Remarks:
I feel that this college needs some serious international collaborations for summer internships & student exchange programs. In the past few years, many people had attempted to strike collaborations, but none of them have been successful. In other IITs, at least half of the students get an opportunity to study abroad while in their B Techs. In our metallurgical engineering Dept., so far only one student has managed an international internship. And the sad part is that our HOD doesn't give a shit about the issue. I once spoke to him on this, instead of considering my suggestions, he got angry at me and refused to comment on this.
International Faculty: Most of us might be aware of the fact that reverse brain drain is quite significant in the IITs. They hire faculty from colleges like Caltech, CMU, UMich, UPenn, to name a few. Well, our college doesn't yet have any faculty from the US or even Europe. Instead, we have people with PhD from BIT Sindri & NIT Jamshepur. Unless we have some International Profs, we cannot expect to have any international exposure here and this college is never going to make a mark at the international level.
Pedantic and adamant administrarion/ faculty: I think the people out here overemphasize on academics rather than overall personality development. In our department, all the scholarships and merits are conferred to the guys with highest GPAs. The department doesn't play any role in boosting the efforts of those who have a sharp research acumen but may not be performing well in academics. One more thing I noticed recently, our TPO officer has made it mandatory for us to restrict our internships to Metallurgical field. We are not supposed to take up management or financial interns. A friend of mine at IIT Kgp recently got an internship at Barclays caital, Singapore despite the fact that his major is Biotech. Seriously the people need to drop such mentalities and accept the importance of extra-curricular activities apart from your majors.
Poor LAN: Pick up lappy and you will know the distressful condition of our LAN. In KGP, the DC speeds rarely goes below an Mbps. Out here it rarely makes it to Mbps. And Dr. N S Rajpoot is totally indifferent to this. No attempts are being made to revamp the LAN. The Director has been in the news so many times for making promises to improve the internet connections. And still no changes have been made till date.
