JNMC AMU MD Psychiatry FAQs

Ques. What are the career options after MD Psychiatry from JNMC, AMU?

Ans. MD Psychiatry is a clinical branch offering diverse career paths. Graduates can establish independent psychiatric clinics, work in government and private hospitals, or pursue academic careers as faculty members in medical colleges. Other options include positions in mental health organizations, de-addiction centers, forensic psychiatry, and community mental health programs. Many graduates also pursue additional fellowships in subspecialties like child psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, or addiction medicine. The degree opens doors to both clinical practice and research opportunities in mental health, making it an excellent choice for those passionate about psychiatric care and mental health advocacy.

Ques. How many seats are available in MD Psychiatry at JNMC and what is the NEET PG score required?

Ans. JNMC has a total of 9 seats in MD Psychiatry. These are divided between All India Quota (AIQ) via MCC counselling and AMU Institutional Quota (for AMU internal candidates). Based on 2025 MCC counselling data, the NEET PG score for MD Psychiatry at JNMC (AIQ) was approximately 4103 marks (cutoff rank). This is a moderately competitive branch compared to other clinical specialties. Scores may vary each year depending on the number of applicants and seat availability. The exact seat split between AIQ and Institutional Quota may vary each year based on regulatory approvals.

Ques. Is MD Psychiatry a good choice for students interested in community mental health?

Ans. Yes, MD Psychiatry is an excellent choice for students interested in community mental health and public mental health services. The Department of Psychiatry at JNMC, AMU has strong community outreach programs and collaborations with mental health organizations. Graduates can work in community mental health centers, NGOs, and government mental health programs. The curriculum includes training in community psychiatry, epidemiology of mental disorders, and mental health promotion. JNMC's location in Aligarh provides exposure to diverse populations and mental health challenges, making it ideal for those aspiring to contribute to community mental health services and mental health advocacy.

Ques. Do MD Psychiatry students at JNMC receive a stipend and how does it help financially?

Ans. Yes, all PG students (Junior Residents) at JNMC receive a monthly stipend regardless of the branch. The stipend is approximately Rs. 80,000 per month in Year 1 (JR1), Rs. 85,000 in Year 2 (JR2), and Rs. 90,000 in Year 3 (JR3). Given the very low course fee of approximately Rs. 1,53,600 for 3 years, the stipend more than covers all expenses including tuition, hostel, and mess charges. This makes MD Psychiatry at JNMC one of the most financially attractive postgraduate medical programs in India, as students actually earn while studying rather than incurring significant expenses.

Ques. Can I establish an independent psychiatric practice after completing MD Psychiatry?

Ans. Yes, MD Psychiatry qualifies graduates for independent clinical practice as it is a clinical branch. After completing the course and obtaining the MD degree, graduates can register with the Medical Council and establish independent psychiatric clinics or practice in hospitals. Many MD Psychiatry graduates from JNMC have successfully established private psychiatric practices across India. However, it is advisable to gain some experience working in established institutions before starting independent practice. The degree also allows graduates to work as consultants in hospitals, corporate wellness programs, and mental health organizations.

Ques. What is the penalty for leaving the MD Psychiatry course midway?

Ans. A penalty of Rs. 8 Lakhs is applicable if a candidate leaves the course after the final round of counselling. Additionally, students who leave the course midway must return the full stipend received during their tenure. This stringent penalty is in place to ensure commitment to the program and to maintain the integrity of the admission process. Candidates should carefully consider their commitment before accepting the seat, as the financial implications of leaving midway are substantial. However, if there are genuine medical or personal emergencies, candidates should contact the Dean's office to explore possible options.
