The MD (Radiotherapy), also known as MD (Radiation Oncology), at Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (SRIHER), Chennai, is a 3-year full-time postgraduate medical degree programme offered by Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute. The programme trains MBBS graduates in the comprehensive management of cancer patients using radiotherapy and allied oncology modalities, including clinical radiation oncology, radiation physics, radiobiology, surgical oncology, medical oncology, and palliative care. With a total seat intake of 3 (all under the General/AIQ quota, with no NRI seats), this is one of the most specialised and limited MD programmes at SRIHER. The annual tuition fee is Rs. 32,00,000, making the total course fee Rs. 96,00,000 over three years. Radiation Oncology is a critical pillar of cancer treatment in India, and with the country's rising cancer burden, trained radiation oncologists are in high demand across government cancer centres, private hospitals, and research institutions.

Admissions for the 2026-27 batch have been completed through MCC NEET PG 2026 counselling (including the stray vacancy round concluded in February 2027). For the upcoming 2027-28 batch, admissions will be based on NEET PG 2027, scheduled on August 30, 2027. Candidates are advised to register on the NBE portal (nbe.edu.in) when registration opens (tentatively April-May 2027) and track MCC counselling schedules at mcc.nic.in.

SRIHER MD (Radiotherapy) FAQs

Ques. What is the career scope of MD (Radiation Oncology / Radiotherapy) in India?

Ans. MD (Radiation Oncology) graduates are in high demand given India's rapidly growing cancer burden. Graduates can work as radiation oncologists in government cancer hospitals (Regional Cancer Centres, AIIMS, Tata Memorial Hospital network), private cancer centres, and academic medical institutions. They can also pursue DrNB (Radiation Oncology) or fellowships in sub-specialties such as stereotactic radiosurgery, brachytherapy, or paediatric radiation oncology. The specialty offers excellent career stability and growth, with salaries ranging from Rs. 15-50 lakhs per annum depending on the institution and experience.

Ques. What is the difference between MD (Radiotherapy) and MD (Radiation Oncology)?

Ans. MD (Radiotherapy) and MD (Radiation Oncology) refer to the same postgraduate medical specialty. "Radiotherapy" is the older nomenclature used historically in India, while "Radiation Oncology" is the current NMC-approved name that reflects the broader scope of the specialty beyond just radiotherapy to include comprehensive cancer management. SRIHER's programme is officially listed as MD (Radiation Oncology) and is the same as MD (Radiotherapy) in terms of curriculum, duration, and career outcomes.

Ques. What equipment and technology will I get to work with during MD (Radiation Oncology) at SRIHER?

Ans. SRIHER's Department of Radiation Oncology is equipped with modern radiotherapy technology including Linear Accelerators (LINAC) with IMRT/IGRT capabilities, 3D Conformal Radiotherapy (3DCRT), Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT), Brachytherapy units (HDR/LDR), CT simulators, and advanced treatment planning systems. Students gain hands-on experience with these technologies under faculty supervision, preparing them for modern radiation oncology practice.

Ques. How many seats are available for MD (Radiation Oncology) at SRIHER, and how competitive is admission?

Ans. There are 3 seats available, all under the General/AIQ quota with no NRI seats. Radiation Oncology is a highly sought-after specialty due to its excellent career prospects and limited seats nationally. Competition for these 3 seats at SRIHER is intense. Candidates should check the previous year's MCC closing ranks for this course at SRIHER on the MCC website (mcc.nic.in) to gauge the level of competition.

Ques. Can I pursue a DrNB (Radiation Oncology) or fellowship after MD (Radiation Oncology) from SRIHER?

Ans. MD (Radiation Oncology) is a terminal postgraduate degree that qualifies you to practice as a radiation oncologist. However, graduates may pursue DrNB (Radiation Oncology) from NBEMS-accredited hospitals for additional training, or fellowships in sub-specialties such as stereotactic radiosurgery, paediatric radiation oncology, or brachytherapy through national and international programmes. Academic positions in medical colleges are also a popular career path for MD (Radiation Oncology) graduates.

Ques. Is there a bond or service obligation after completing MD (Radiation Oncology) at SRIHER?

Ans. SRIHER does not impose a mandatory service bond for MD (Radiation Oncology) students admitted through MCC AIQ counselling. However, students should carefully review the terms and conditions at the time of admission, as institutional policies may change. Candidates admitted under sponsored or special categories may have different obligations. It is advisable to clarify this directly with the SRIHER admissions office at the time of reporting.
