Should I go for civil engineering or metallurgy and material science engineering in NIT Trichy?

Sreeja PrasadDual degree from Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (2021)

I would suggest you go for metallurgy if you plan to do a job right after completing your degree. Metallurgy has more job opportunities to offer. With Metallurgy, you can easily learn coding and go for tech companies. NIT Trichy has a great coding culture, so picking up coding skills will not be difficult.

If you plan to prepare for civil services or any other government job, I would suggest you go for civil engineering.

When compared to metallurgy, there are fewer job opportunities in the civil department.

If you plan on doing an MBA after having done your engineering, you can opt for either of them because then it does not matter anyway.

Should I choose NIT Trichy metallurgy over NIT Raipur ECE?

Aman Kumar
Rani PandeyStudied Mechanical Engineering at National Institute of Technology, Raipur (2020)

My friend is currently pursuing B.Tech from NIT Raipur in the mechanical department. His honest opinion says that you should go for metallurgy at NIT Trichy. Here’s why

  • If you went for the wrong branch or found out later that this is not your cup of tea, then after the 1st year you will have an option called branch sliding. In this process, you can change your branch from the current one to the desired one based upon the number of vacancies and score.
  • If you went for the wrong college, then there's no option as a college slide! You’ll have to devote your 4 years in that college anyhow, except if you again decide to give mains.

So, if you simply want to get into a better place then choose NIT Trichy. This is because you can get the advantage of branch sliding anyhow. However, if you don’t want to take risk of not getting the desired branch, then go for NIT Raipur.

At last, sort your preferences and know your sole aim. Because in the long run, your happiness and satisfaction are what matters the most!

Which is the better course between NIT Trichy ECE or IIT Bhubaneswar for Metallurgy ?

Deepika MishraB. Tech Electronics and Communication Engineering National Institute of Technology (2020)

NIT Trichy would be a better choice than IIT Bhubaneswar for Metallurgy because of the following reasons.

  • The placements are better for in ECE than in Metallurgy.
  • If students fail to get core placement in NIT Trichy, they can still try for top-notch coding and management companies recruiting from the ECE department.
  • There are numerous Technical clubs for first years students who are passionate about Electronics.
  • NIT Trichy has lower academic fees than IIT Bhubaneswar. But it may vary for different courses. The course fee of B.Tech in NIT is 72,100 whereas in IIT Bhubaneswar it is 1.4 lakh.
  • In terms of quality of infrastructure and social life, NIT Trichy is better than IIT Bhubaneswar as it is much older.
  • NIT Trichy ECE in 2019 has undergraduate placement of 95% and IIT Bhubaneswar Metallurgy has 90% placement in 2019.

Fees and Financial Aid:

the normal fee structure for a student without any sort of remission is 2.75 lakh for 1st year and this includes tution fees, hostel fees, institute fee, internet fee, medical fee, etc. the tution fee for first year is 125000 (62500 per semester) and the hostel fee for first year is around 1lakh(for first sem it's 53000 and for second semester it's around 48000.the hostel fee for consecutive semester decreases). for ews student you get remission but the remission amount depends on your ews category for e.g, for below 1 lakh the remission amount is 62500 meaning you don't have to pay tution fee but you still have to pay the the rest amount like hostel fee, internet fee, computer lab, medical fee, etc the amount comes down to 150,950(this includes hostel fee). for ews category greater than 1lakh but lesser than 5lakh then per semester you get a remission of 66% meaning 41,834, so the amount payable is around 20,666 meaning per semester you have to pay 1.91 lakh(including hostel fee and other fee) and for above 5lakh but below 8lakh you get no remission whatsoever. There are many types of scholarship available for students like NSP,airtel scholarship(but this is for circuital branches and cse only),there are many other scholarships. the fee structure for sc/st category is same as ews below 1lakh. At NIT Tichy, the one time fees i paid was 26,500 at the time of admission and a tution fees of 62500 per semester there are various financial aids available like nsp scholaship and income based fee remission for example the students with family income less than 5lpa they pay around 33% of the tution fees and with students with family income of less than 1lpa they pay 0 tution fees moreover for categories like sc,st and pwd the tution fees is 0 irrespective of the family income the hostel and mess fees combined keeps on changing year by year this year i paid around 48,500 for this odd semester last year i paid around 90,000 for the enitre year which has all the hostel and mess charges most of my batchmates are availiing this income based fee remmision in which they are paying either 0 or 33%(20,666) tutuion fees which is very beneficial for them. Some of the studens are also on scholarship like the nsp scholarship or the scholapship provided by airtel or their state scholarship some of them are studying on loans as well. Every odd semester they take the charges of development fees, lab fees and the other compulsory fees which adds upto 25000 along the 62500 tution fees so the 25000 fees every student has to pay irrespective of the caste or income.
