The University was founded in 1994 as the Central University Educational institute and has 3 permanent and 1 temporary campus with Lumami, Zunheboto as its Headquarter. There are a total of 41 departments out of which 13 departments and 4 centres are located in Lumami, Zunheboto, 11 departments and 2 centres at Meriema campus, 12 departments at Medziphema campus and 5 departments at the temporary campus in Dimapur.
