NMIMS B.Tech CSE Cyber Security FAQs

Ques. Is the B.Tech CSE (Cyber Security) at NMIMS MPSTME Mumbai a good choice compared to B.Tech Computer Engineering or IT?

Ans. The Cyber Security specialization is a newer, more focused program compared to the traditional Computer Engineering or IT programs. It is ideal for students specifically interested in network security, ethical hacking, and digital forensics. The Virginia Tech collaboration adds significant value. However, if you want broader CS exposure, Computer Engineering or IT may offer more flexibility. Placement-wise, all B.Tech programs at MPSTME share the same placement cell and recruiter pool.

Ques. What is the exact role of Virginia Tech in this program?

Ans. Virginia Tech (VT) faculty deliver 4 courses within the 4-year B.Tech curriculum. This gives students direct exposure to international teaching. Additionally, eligible students can pursue a pathway to earn a BS and MS from Virginia Tech, USA, making it a potential 3-degree opportunity. This is a significant differentiator for students considering global careers.

Ques. Is the NCET score the only way to get admission, or are there other routes?

Ans. NCET is the primary and mandatory entrance exam for most Indian students. However, NMIMS also accepts SAT/ACT scores for international and NRI candidates. For B.Tech CSE Cyber Security, NCET is the standard admission pathway for domestic students.

Ques. How competitive is the admission to B.Tech CSE Cyber Security at NMIMS Mumbai? What score is needed?

Ans. With only 60 seats and high demand, this is one of the more competitive B.Tech programs at NMIMS. While NMIMS does not officially publish cutoff scores, students on forums report that a score of 80+ out of 120 in NCET, combined with strong Class 12 marks (above 85% in PCM), significantly improves chances. The merit list is based on a combination of NCET score and Class 12 aggregate.

Ques. Does NMIMS Mumbai provide placement support specifically for Cyber Security roles, or is it generic IT placement?

Ans. The placement cell at MPSTME is centralized and handles all B.Tech programs together. While there is no dedicated Cyber Security placement drive, the cell does invite companies from the cybersecurity and IT security domain. Students with relevant certifications (CEH, CCNA Security) and internship experience tend to secure roles in cybersecurity-specific profiles. Many students also receive offers in broader IT roles such as software development, data analytics, and consulting.

Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed for B.Tech students at NMIMS Mumbai?

Ans. Hostel accommodation at the Mumbai campus is NOT mandatory and is allotted on a first-come, first-served basis after admission fee payment. Given the limited hostel capacity and high demand, it is advisable to apply for hostel accommodation immediately after receiving the admission offer. Students who do not get hostel accommodation typically arrange private PGs near the Vile Parle campus.

How do the new HR programs of IIM Ranchi, NMIMS, and XIMB measure up to the established ones of XLRI, TISS, MDI and SCMHRD?

Apoorv AshutoshFormer PhD Candidate at Indian Institute of Management Lucknow (2017–2020)

The simple answer to your question is no, the new HR programs of IIM Ranchi, NMIMS, or XIMB are not at par with the established ones XLRI, TISS, MDI, and SCMHRD. The established programs especially that of XLRI are the epitome of HR programs. They cannot be compared to the new ones at any given level or parameter.

  • Faculty: The professors of XLRI are renowned throughout the industry for their competency. They specialize in almost every domain one can think of be it Law, Competency Modeling, Compensation, or Performance Management.
  • Peers: It’s the cream students who get the opportunity to get into a prestigious college like XLRI. You can see tough competition between the finest students at college. Every individual has a valuable opinion and stands to contradict others. Their thinking pattern is broad and given a case study, they look at all angles from accounting to finance to laws while proposing the solution. The situation at TISS is also quite similar.

Now one can say that the curriculum can be replicated and learned faculty can be sought to match the quality of the HR program at these institutes. But the truth is faculty and curriculum are the main but not the only factors that determine an institute's worth. Its own culture, ethics, and background have a lot to do with the programs it offers.

So one cannot match XLRIs programs no matter how much they try.

Should I choose ECE in SRM OR NMIMS? Should I also consider an MBA Tech course?

Arnav GoswamiMBA BM, XLRI (2019)

Choosing among the two given institutes depends upon what you want to pursue in the future. The points below give a brief overview of the advantages of both the choices, based on which you can make a decision.

  • If you want to do an MBA after the B.Tech directly, without preparing for CAT, XAT, MAT, GMAT, NMAT, etc. prefer the MBA Tech course from NMIMS. Although the B.Tech degree from NMIMS is not that good, the MBA degree is quite valuable and offers decent opportunities.
  • If you want to do a separate B. Tech and then prepare for CAT, XAT, GMAT, etc for an MBA, then you should choose SRM over the other. In addition, the ECE department is one of the best departments in SRM University, which has an excellent faculty and offers good placements too.
  • If you are interested in doing MBA from some foreign university, get minimum work experience after graduation.

These are some of the most important things to consider that will help you make a choice among the institutes.
