NMIMS B.Sc. AMC FAQs

Ques. What is the difference between B.Sc. Applied Mathematical Computing and B.Sc. Data Science at NMIMS?

Ans. Both programs are offered under NSOMASA at NMIMS Mumbai and are admitted through NMIMS-MST. B.Sc. Applied Mathematical Computing focuses more on pure and applied mathematics — including Abstract Algebra, Metric Spaces, Partial Differential Equations, Integral Transforms, and Financial Engineering — making it ideal for students interested in mathematical modelling, quantitative finance, and research. B.Sc. Data Science, on the other hand, focuses more on practical data science applications including Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Big Data, and Cloud Computing. Students with a stronger inclination towards mathematics and theory should opt for Applied Mathematical Computing, while those interested in applied data science and technology should opt for Data Science.

Ques. Is Mathematics mandatory in Class 12 to apply for B.Sc. Applied Mathematical Computing at NMIMS?

Ans. Yes. Mathematics and/or Statistics as one of the subjects in Class 12 is mandatory for eligibility. A minimum of 50% aggregate marks in Class 12 is also required. Given the highly mathematical nature of the program, students with strong Mathematics backgrounds (especially from the Science stream) are best suited for this program.

Ques. What elective tracks are available in B.Sc. Applied Mathematical Computing?

Ans. Students can choose between two elective tracks in the later semesters: the Mathematical Computing track (covering Advanced Graph Theory, Mathematical Biology, Complex Analysis, Introduction to Quantum Computation) and the Financial Computing track (covering Financial Modelling, Stochastic Calculus, Financial Engineering, Stochastic Finance). The Financial Computing track is particularly popular among students interested in quantitative finance and investment banking.

Ques. What career options are available after B.Sc. Applied Mathematical Computing from NMIMS?

Ans. Graduates can pursue careers as Quantitative Analysts, Mathematical Modellers, Data Consultants, Financial Analysts, Research Scientists, and Actuaries. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate programs such as M.Sc. in Mathematics, Statistics, Financial Engineering, or MBA programs. The program also prepares students well for competitive exams like GATE (Mathematics), GRE, and actuarial exams.

Ques. What is the fee for B.Sc. Applied Mathematical Computing at NMIMS Mumbai?

Ans. The annual tuition fee for the 2025 batch was Rs. 2,00,000, making it one of the most affordable programs at NMIMS. For a 4-year program, the total tuition fee is approximately Rs. 8,00,000. The 2026 batch fees will be officially communicated at the time of admission. This is significantly lower than most other NMIMS programs, making it an excellent value proposition for students interested in mathematical sciences.

Ques. Can students switch between B.Sc. Applied Mathematical Computing and B.Sc. Data Science at NMIMS?

Ans. Switching between programs is generally not permitted after admission. Students should carefully evaluate their interests and career goals before choosing between the two programs. Both programs are admitted through NMIMS-MST, and students can indicate their program preference at the time of registration. It is advisable to attend information sessions and speak with current students before making a decision.

How do the new HR programs of IIM Ranchi, NMIMS, and XIMB measure up to the established ones of XLRI, TISS, MDI and SCMHRD?

Apoorv AshutoshFormer PhD Candidate at Indian Institute of Management Lucknow (2017–2020)

The simple answer to your question is no, the new HR programs of IIM Ranchi, NMIMS, or XIMB are not at par with the established ones XLRI, TISS, MDI, and SCMHRD. The established programs especially that of XLRI are the epitome of HR programs. They cannot be compared to the new ones at any given level or parameter.

  • Faculty: The professors of XLRI are renowned throughout the industry for their competency. They specialize in almost every domain one can think of be it Law, Competency Modeling, Compensation, or Performance Management.
  • Peers: It’s the cream students who get the opportunity to get into a prestigious college like XLRI. You can see tough competition between the finest students at college. Every individual has a valuable opinion and stands to contradict others. Their thinking pattern is broad and given a case study, they look at all angles from accounting to finance to laws while proposing the solution. The situation at TISS is also quite similar.

Now one can say that the curriculum can be replicated and learned faculty can be sought to match the quality of the HR program at these institutes. But the truth is faculty and curriculum are the main but not the only factors that determine an institute's worth. Its own culture, ethics, and background have a lot to do with the programs it offers.

So one cannot match XLRIs programs no matter how much they try.

Should I choose ECE in SRM OR NMIMS? Should I also consider an MBA Tech course?

Arnav GoswamiMBA BM, XLRI (2019)

Choosing among the two given institutes depends upon what you want to pursue in the future. The points below give a brief overview of the advantages of both the choices, based on which you can make a decision.

  • If you want to do an MBA after the B.Tech directly, without preparing for CAT, XAT, MAT, GMAT, NMAT, etc. prefer the MBA Tech course from NMIMS. Although the B.Tech degree from NMIMS is not that good, the MBA degree is quite valuable and offers decent opportunities.
  • If you want to do a separate B. Tech and then prepare for CAT, XAT, GMAT, etc for an MBA, then you should choose SRM over the other. In addition, the ECE department is one of the best departments in SRM University, which has an excellent faculty and offers good placements too.
  • If you are interested in doing MBA from some foreign university, get minimum work experience after graduation.

These are some of the most important things to consider that will help you make a choice among the institutes.
