ICT M.Pharm (Pharmacognosy) FAQs
Ques. Is M.Pharm Pharmacognosy a good choice at ICT Mumbai, and what makes it different from M.Pharm Pharmaceutics?
Ans. M.Pharm Pharmacognosy at ICT Mumbai is an excellent choice for students interested in natural product science, herbal drug development, and Ayurveda-pharma integration. Unlike Pharmaceutics, which focuses on synthetic drug formulation and dosage form design, Pharmacognosy deals with the study of drugs derived from natural sources including plants, fungi, and marine organisms. At ICT Mumbai, the department has active research in phytochemistry, herbal healthcare product development, and natural product isolation, with faculty members having expertise in areas such as Aloe vera product technology, CNS-active herbal compounds, and standardisation of Ayurvedic formulations. Given the growing global demand for herbal medicines and nutraceuticals, M.Pharm Pharmacognosy graduates are well-positioned for careers in the rapidly expanding herbal pharma and nutraceutical industry.
Ques. With only 6 seats in M.Pharm Pharmacognosy, how is the specialisation allotted at ICT Mumbai? Can I specifically choose Pharmacognosy?
Ans. The M.Pharm programme at ICT Mumbai has a total of 24 seats across four specialisations (Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacology, and Pharmacognosy), with 6 seats each. Admission is done through a single merit list based on GPAT scores, and specialisation allotment is done at the department level after the completion of the admission process, based on merit and the preferences given by the candidate. You can indicate your preference for Pharmacognosy, and if seats are available after higher-preference candidates are allotted, you will be offered the specialisation. In case seats remain vacant in a particular specialisation, candidates may be transferred to their higher preference. It is advisable to list Pharmacognosy as your first preference if that is your primary interest, and to have a backup plan given the limited seats.
Ques. What are the career prospects after M.Pharm Pharmacognosy from ICT Mumbai? Is it limited to herbal companies only?
Ans. M.Pharm Pharmacognosy from ICT Mumbai opens doors to a wide range of career opportunities beyond just herbal companies. Graduates can work in quality control and quality assurance at herbal and Ayurvedic pharma companies (Himalaya, Dabur, Patanjali, Zandu, Emami), nutraceutical and dietary supplement firms, cosmeceutical companies, and contract research organisations (CROs) specialising in natural product analysis. In the regulatory space, there is growing demand for pharmacognosy experts in agencies dealing with herbal drug approvals and standardisation. Many ICT graduates also pursue Ph.D. in natural product chemistry, ethnopharmacology, or marine pharmacognosy at top institutions in India and abroad. The ICT brand significantly enhances employability, and the interdisciplinary environment at ICT allows Pharmacognosy students to collaborate with Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology departments on projects related to extraction technology and bioprocess development.
Ques. Does ICT Mumbai have active research projects in Pharmacognosy, and can M.Pharm students participate in funded projects?
Ans. Yes, the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology at ICT Mumbai has active research projects in natural products and herbal healthcare. Faculty members have expertise in areas such as extraction and isolation of phytoconstituents, process development for Aloe vera-based products (gel, drink, juice, cosmetics), development of herbal nutraceuticals, and CNS-active compounds from plant sources. The department has received funding from government agencies and private industry for these projects. M.Pharm students working on their thesis in the 3rd and 4th semesters can be associated with these funded projects, which may provide additional project fellowships over and above the GPAT fellowship. The UGC has recognised the department as a Centre of Advanced Studies, under which 15 SAP fellowships are awarded per year across the department, some of which may be available to M.Pharm students.
Ques. Is the GPAT fellowship of Rs. 12,400 per month sufficient to cover living expenses in Mumbai for an M.Pharm student?
Ans. The GPAT fellowship of Rs. 12,400 per month can cover a significant portion of living expenses for students who get hostel accommodation at ICT Mumbai. Hostel fees are approximately Rs. 3,500 to Rs. 4,000 per month (including accommodation and common charges), and mess charges are approximately Rs. 1,800 per month, bringing the total hostel and food cost to around Rs. 5,500 to Rs. 6,000 per month. This leaves approximately Rs. 6,000 to Rs. 7,000 per month for personal expenses, books, and travel, which is manageable given the subsidised campus environment. However, students who do not get hostel accommodation will need to arrange private accommodation in Mumbai, where rents in the Matunga area (where ICT is located) can range from Rs. 8,000 to Rs. 15,000 per month for a shared room, making the fellowship less sufficient. It is strongly advisable to apply for hostel accommodation at the earliest opportunity after admission.
Ques. Can a student with a B.Pharm background from a non-ICT college apply for M.Pharm Pharmacognosy at ICT Mumbai, and is there any preference given to ICT alumni?
Ans. Yes, students from any UGC/AICTE-recognised university or institute can apply for M.Pharm Pharmacognosy at ICT Mumbai, provided they have a B.Pharm degree with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks (55% for reserved category). There is no institutional preference given to ICT alumni in the M.Pharm admission process; the merit list is prepared solely on the basis of GPAT scores (Level 1) or ICT written test performance (Level 2/Level 3). In fact, many M.Pharm students at ICT Mumbai come from colleges across Maharashtra and other states. The key requirement is a valid GPAT score for Level 1 admission. Non-GPAT candidates can also apply but will be considered only after all GPAT-qualified candidates have been allotted seats, making a strong GPAT score the most important factor for securing admission to this highly competitive programme.
