Fees and Financial Aid:

The fees is very low almost negligible. It's 425 inr for the whole course. Infact you get a stipend of 500 inr per month from your first year itself and you have a compulsory internship of 1 year where the stipend is around 10K. The fees is same for all categories. There are 11 seats in total. You have to qualify the entrance exam which is AIIMS Bsc paramedical exam with a good rank. BMRIT course is available for the top rankers only. So you have to do the choice filling correctly. There are scholarships for SC and ST category students for financial aid. It's a really good course with enough time for your hobbies and you get patient handling skills from the first day as you've to do postings everyday. The scope is really good in govt sector and abroad.

I m currently pursuing MBBS, which is a 5.5 year course. The total fee for the entire duration is ?1650, which remains the same for all students, irrespective of their category. I belong to the ST category, but there is no fee difference based on category-everyone pays the same amount. The fees are very nominal and have remained unchanged over the years. There hasn't been any increase in the fee structure throughout the course . The entire amount is paid at the beginning of the course . As for scholarship, I personally did not receive any financial aid or scholarship from the college. Overall , the fee structure is extremely affordable and stable, which makes the course financially accessible to many students.

AIIMS Delhi: 4 Answered Questions

Which way is better to do an MS general surgery and then take up neurosurgery as a superspeciality or the direct 6yrs Mch Neurosurgery course offered by AIIMS and NIMHANS after an MBBS?

Swastika RoyMBBS Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery Degrees, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences

I know a person who is pursuing Neurosurgery and he does not feel it is not necessary to go through 3 years of MS general surgery before taking up neurosurgery. As a 6-year student, he was supposed to rotate through 10 months of general surgery.

He did not find general surgical skills that he acquired during the rotation, of much use in neurosurgery, other than the very basic knot tying and suturing skills, which can also be acquired through dedicated lab practice.

The other techniques followed in neurosurgery are significantly different from those followed in general surgery. The extensive use of the surgical microscope and bipolar coagulation for hemostasis distinguishes this surgical discipline from general surgery.

Today, neurosurgeons typically use access surgeons (thoracic surgeons or urologists) if they want to perform any unconventional approaches to the spine, which is much safer for the patient.

A lot of post-MS students don’t find much difference in incompetence or spectrum of surgeries and they are comfortable when compared with those having gone through six years of courses.

Globally, there is a trend towards running integrated courses only. Also, in India, pursuing a 6 years’ course after MBBS means you will have one less entrance examination to worry about.

How is the biophysics course at AIIMS Delhi?

Sabeer Chalana
Aditya GhoseAll India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi

AIIMS M.Sc Biophysics course is a 2-year master's level course. Here are some relevant details about it.

  • The course is not everyone’s cup of tea and is quite demanding. It’s best to take the course if you are sincerely passionate about it and are ready to commute to hard work and dedication and a lot of hard work.
  • Students of this course only have 2 classes daily from Monday to Friday and all the remaining time has to be spent in the lab working on your masters' project.
  • While other universities only give you a year to do research work, AIIMS gives you 2 years to explore, learn lab skills and work on your thesis.
  • The most important step is to choose a good guide and lab. Go for the one that offers the maximum opportunity. This is your learning stage and you will have to pay attention to minute details, so it’s important to choose a good lab.
  • Those who are on the lookout for a high paying job after Masters from Biophysics will be disappointed as it’s completely a research-based field.
