- The faculty is very experienced and they help the students all round the year. They are highly qualified and they teach by going out of the textbooks to make the students develop a clear understanding of the topic and subject.
- There are a lot of college events where many public speakers are invited to give lectures and educational speeches to the students. The speakers range from renowned historians to civil servants, and this helps students in their education.
- The library has a number of great books which help students not only to use as a reference to what is being taught in class, but also for simple reading. The library also has multiple magazines and newspapers which helps students get updated.
Dislikes
- The institute lacks a proper "lost and found" system, or a system which would allow students to find their lost items. This is important as students may lose their items at the college campus and should find a way of finding it.
- The college administration must work to install more CCTV cameras all around the campus to create a more safe environment and for student safety especially when it is dark. These cameras must be closely monitored to ensure student safety.
Course Curriculum Overview
The History course curriculum is carefully selected to ensure that students get a fair educational understanding and become more knowledgeable in the process. It prepares us to know historial facts which are not only related to the Indian subcontinent but also in the global context, for an all round understanding and to match with international standards. The books recommended are of very high standard which allows the students to prepare themselves better, especially if someone has an interest in taking the subject to the next level. Apart from students getting an understanding about only history, students are also given skill based and value based programmes which includes courses like-tourism, EVS and more. This helps students in their overall acedemic build-up. Exams are conducted regularly inorder to make sure that students study all round the year.
Internships Opportunities
Being a student of Humanities, there is limited internship opportunities compared to other streams like science and b.com and economics. However, there are some internship opportunities like the Rajya Sabha Internship Scheme, NITI Ayog Internship Scheme etc. These help students build their personality and charachter and help them learn multiple new things in life which they can apply in their future. Personally, i have not yet participated in any internship scheme but I will try to do so during the summer break.
Fees and Financial Aid
Being a part of the History Honours Department from Kirorimal College, my annual fees is around 15,800(General category) for the first year. There are other scholarship programmes available in the institute which allows students to get eduction at a very cheap rate. These are financial aid programmes for those who cannot afford it. Apart from the annual fee, students are supposed to pay a certain amount for the semester examinations held twice each year. They generally cost around 1200-1500 rupees per student every semester. Being in the humanities stream, there are no lab charges involved. The fees has more or less remained the same over the past few years though it has increased slightly over time.
Campus Life
My college experience is simply amazing as the institute has a great campus and great students. The campus is quite large and has a number of trees and plants. There is a great infrastructure present with large classrooms, buildings, auditoriums and libraries. The college organises fests and cultural festivaals all round the year especially during the winter months when the temperature is quite soothing. A number of events like debates, club activities etc are organised and speakers are invited to give lectures. There are multiple books and journals fund in the library. In the college library has 1.5 lakh books and keeps newspapers and magazines to help students get updated with the daily news at the national and international level, which also help them prepare for civil service examinations. In each classroom there are clean chairs and tables fixed in an organised manner, and in some of them there are projectors which allows students to show their online presentations at the classroom.Multiple sports and extracurricular activities held regularly, and large number of students participate in these. There are not only inter-college matches but also among the departments as well. There are multiple student clubs as well which help students learn multiple skills and help them become more productive. These activities help students build their overall character and help them in the long run.
Admission
I had applied to Hindu College and St Stephens before Kirorimal College. This was because I wanted to simply get their brand name, though the teaching quality is more or less the same at this level. I chose this college over the others because it has a very good and qualified faculty. I was not able to get Hindu college and St Stephens as my CUET score was below their cut-off score. For my college admission, I had to simply choose my college preference in the DU website and it automatically made the selection depending on my CUET score. For Department of History at Kirorimal College, the cut-off for Gnereal Category is around 855+. The admission procedure was extremely smooth and was very convenient for students.
Faculty
There are many faculty members in the Department of History at Kirorimal College. currently in my batch, there are 3 teachers teaching 3 different papers- History of India, Social Formations, and History Of USA.The faculty memebers are highly qualified and they teach by giving us multiple facts about particular events and help us understand difficult concepts very easily. Each department for each year is divided mainly in 2 different groups(35 each) in order to improve the student teacher ratio. This helps not only the teacher to know more about the students in the class, but also helps students ask teachers about their doubts or questions with more clarity. The teachers help in clarifying all doubts and questions which students ask, and they also regularly send important study materials in the class groups. For me, Dhiraj Kumar Sir teaches very well the paper on USA. This is because he taught us in a way which helped us understand the topic very easily and he also taught us things beyond the ritten syllabus for a better understanding. There are internal exams held each semester and continuous presentations and assignments. These help students to continuously be well prepared all throughout the semester. If a student concentrates and studies well all round the semester, neither are the internal exams nor the semester exams difficult. Generally all students pass the exams both the internals and externals. In the internal exam system, there are 70 marks involved while in the semester exams there are 90 marks involved.
Night Life
Inside the college campus itself there is a gym in the sports complex, a cafeteria and a library. Though students generally avail these facilities inside the college campus itself, there are other spots outside the college where students meet and spend some time. Right outside the college there is the Sudama tea stall where a lot of college students gather to have a fresh cup of tea and some snacks. Other than sudama, many students regularly to Kamalanagar, as it is not only a market area with multiple things available, but also because of its location as it is very close to all the colleges in Delhi University North Campus. Most of the PGs are located in Kamalanagar and Vijaynagar, and those staying at hostels are inside the college grounds itself. Classes generally end by 3.40pm but some of them extend till 5.40 pm at the most. In terms of safety at night, it is generally advisable to not go outside at dark, especially if the particular area has no lights.
