Likes
- Students are mostly great. The staff more or less are nice.
- Faculty is quite good. The professors are quite helpful.
- The location of the college is quite easy accessible. You can use different types of transportation.
Dislikes
- The campus is small, There are not enough rooms. The cubicles are really not enough to accommodate big classes.
- The rooms are not at all conditioned. Despite the high semester fees, the rooms are not comfortable for summers.
- The college solely focuses on academics. So if you’re planning to enjoy fest, then don’t come. Because we have no fest.
Course Curriculum Overview
I have always wanted to persue English as a career. I love studying English but not a big fan of the new curriculum by NEP that includes a lot pf irrelevant papers. The semesters are not consistent. Odd semesters usually have a lot of time like 6-8 months but even semesters barely consist of 2-3 months.
Fees and Financial Aid
Initially during admission we have to submit almost 10k, plus the other fees for id cards etc. Later per semester we have to submit 8650 which is a lot more than a lot of colleges under University of Calcutta.
Campus Life
There is no fest, let me make this very clear from the very beginning. So don't get your hopes high. There's this one Annual Day thing which is pretty similar to that of a normal school. Also there's are several clubs like cultural club, literary club, fashion club etc. We do have a sports day every year.
Admission
I applied to 6 big renowned colleges including Lady Brabourne and Bethune. However the cut off was pretty high there. Normally Gokhale has the cut off of minimum 85% in English. I was also eligible to get admission to Maulana Azad College and Jaipuria College. But I chose Gokhale because of the good reviews.
Faculty
A few departments like English and Psychology has students more than 30-40. Other than that mostly 10-15 students and 4-5 professors per department. In terms of being cooperative, definitely English department is the best. The professors are extremely nice and helpful. I think I have had a few classes with Psychology department and the professors there are not that good honestly. Plus my friend had to give her back paper thrice due to a mistake done by their professor, so no. The university sets the paper and so far we know University of Calcutta is pretty famous of its back papers. So far quite a few students are already a victim of it.
Night Life
There's no gym. We have a cafeteria, the food is good and cheap. The library is air conditioned but it lacks the variety of books. But it's in South Kolkata. You get Nandan, Victoria Memorial, Forum Mall at a hand distance. So if you want to hang out, you can basically go anywhere in a really short time.
