What Students Say
Likes
- One of the things about my college that I liked was that there wasn't significant academic pressure
- Another thing that I liked was that the faculty treated us like adults and did not believe in spoonfeeding like in school.
- I also liked the fact that significant placement support was provided by the college and large portion of the batch got placed even in recession, providing better opportunities than other PPP IIITs.
Dislikes
- One of the things I disliked was that the campus is situated away from the city and lacked amenities like gym indoor sports when we first entered college. A gym and indoor sports amenities started functioning in 2024
- Another thing I disliked was that infrastructural development like building of new hostels, building of the SAC, development of ground took a lot of time.
- Another thing I disliked was that it lacked basic medical facilities like an in-house doctor or an infirmary.
Course Curriculum Overview
The decision to choose this course over other branches in similarly ranked NITs during JOSAA counselling was primarily driven by the fact that IIIT CSE curriculum does not include unnecessary subjects like Engineering Drawing that are common to all branches in colleges like NITs. Other aspects of the curriculum that influenced my decision was that core subjects from CSE were taught from the first semester itself.
Placement Experience
Campus placements of the college are decent, considering the circumstances of the industry. Students become eligible to sit for placements in the 7th semester. The placement season is still ongoing. Some companies that visited include Tekion, Alteryx, De Shaw Samsung, Deloitte, CGI, Natwest, etc. Some students have secured placements through off campus means at major product based companies like Google, Flipkart and Amazon. So far, around 70% of the students have been placed. The highest package has been more than 50 LPA while the average in previous years hovered around 14 LPA. I have opted for higher studies after my course
Fees and Financial Aid
Tuition fees paid (Rs. 250000 per year) Rs. 100000- Hostel fees paid (25000 per year) Mess fees paid 4000 per month (on a pro rata basis) - amounts to around 32000 per year (as it is charged only for 8 months during which semester is going on) No fees concession for SC/ST, but scholarships are available
Campus Life
Yuvaan is the major annual festival at IIIT Guwahati. Entropy is the major technical fest. Books and journals are readily available in the library. Classrooms are technologically equipped. Sports facilities do leave a lot to be desired though. There are student clubs for students with various interests.
Admission
My decision to choose IIIT Guwahati CSE over other colleges was driven by my JEE rank as well as my insistence to prioritize branch over college during JOSAA counselling rounds. I reckoned that it was better to choose CSE over other branches in better ranked colleges.
Faculty
The faculty to student ratio is around 1:24. The faculty to student relationship varies. Some faculties are more open to interaction than others. Some are approachable in their cabin during office hours, while some faculties do not like students approaching them. Faculties I liked in particular are Dr. Sumit Mishra (in a different institute now) and Dr. David Lal (who teaches HSS subjects)The level of difficulty of exams vary. Most students are able to pass the exams. Some courses have more number of failed students while some courses have less number of failed students, but generally the number of failed students is below 10%.
Night Life
A gym as part of a students activity centre was opened in 2024. There is a cafeteria near the academic section and there is a night canteen and a night mess in the boys hostel that is open till well past midnight (3 am). Campus timings: You have to be in the campus by 10 pm, but there are no curfew timings for the hostel. The locality is pretty safe to roam around at night. Famous hangout spots near the campus include Dhanjit's shop, a one stop solution for all your needs, which has two branches, one near the front gate and one near the back gate.
