Course Curriculum Overview
The core branches have very outdated curriculum which are of little use in the industry. There is a high scope for the curriculum to be updated according to the current trends and demands. The professors should take the classes with more sincerety instead of just leaving after the lectures and make it more interesting and knowledge. The frequency of major exams is twice a semester. The midsems are of 30 marks with 1 hour and the endsems are of 50 marks with 2 hours time. The exams are moderate in difficulty.
Internships Opportunities
There are internship oppurtunities after the 2nd year and after the 3rd year. Students can either do internship in companies or work in research in other institutes like IISc or IITs. In the final year, the students are required to prepare a final year project for their degree.
Placement Experience
The placements are very good in NIT Silchar which makes it a highly preferred college by most engineering aspirants. There is mandatory industry exposure which can be done through internships at the end of 2nd year or in 3rd year. High number of companies visit the campus each year including tech as well as core companies. Highest package goes as high as 60LPA and average is 13LPA. Majority of the students get placed and the others opt for higher studies. I will be preparing for placements and try to secure a job through campus placements
Fees and Financial Aid
Year wise fees for me would be about 1 lakh 16 thousand rupees. The Tuition fees is zero for students belonging to SC category, a 10 thousand caution fees is taken, and a total of about 38 thousand is required for first semester including all fees for SC. The fees varies for others according to their categories like General, Income between 1-5 lakhs year, Income under 1 lakh per year. The detailed information about the college fees can be obtained from the institute website. Various scholarships are available through NSP portal although the institute does not have any scholarship of itself.
Campus Life
The campus life is very good with active clubs and societies which make the life here interesting. There are mainly two fests in February and in November. The cultural fest Incandescence happens in February and Tecnoesis, the technical fest takes place in November. NIT Silchar has the largest digital library in Asia which contains almost all the books and journals required in the academics along with non academic books. The classrooms are not air conditioned but are well ventilated with both blackboards, whiteboards along with projectors. Sports and extracurriculars are something that are taken seriously here and promoted highly. The college teams have won in many sports in All India Inter NIT competitions. There are groups like NSS and NCC in the college which do charity work on a regular basis in nearby places
Hostel Facilities
The hostels are very old with low maintenance and are dirty. There are three seater and single seater rooms in the hostels. There are fans, tubelights and ethernet ports in every room for each person. The quality and taste of food in mess is good with both vegetarian and non vegetarian food and proper hygiene is maintained by the staff. There is a mess management committee to ensure that the mess is working properly. Registration for hostel is done during the admission itself and the fees of 22500 is taken per semester. Most students stay in hostels as there are not many PG outside the campus nearby.
Admission
I had applied to some other NITs but could not secure a seat in them due to low JEE rank. I chose this college due to its high importance in the country and its high placements. To get a seat in B.Tech in NIT Silchar you need to get a good rank in JEE Main and then apply for the college through JoSAA, The admission experience was pretty smooth and easy and there are seniors and staff available during the admission time for any assistance.
Faculty
Faculty to student ratio in NITS is 1:80. Most faculties are poor in teaching although highly qualified and are not approachable. Faculty just comes to the class, gives lecture and leaves making us attend classes only for the mandatory 75% attendance. Every semester lasts for 4-5 months where there are two main exams- the midsems and the endsems. They are moderate in difficulty and majority of the students clear the exams with good grades and there is relative grading in place. The course curriculum is outdated but important for getting the basics clear. Along with the midsems and endsems, there are some minor tests and class tests in between which constitute the internal marks.
Interview Experience
There is no interview or Group Discussion for admission. It is through JEE Main on the basis of all india rank. One needs to have a very good rank in JEE as it is a highly competitive college with tough selection.
Night Life
There is a gym in the sports complex, the library closes pretty early so students go to a study centre in CSE department which is open 24/7. There is hostel timing of 9:30 pm but it is not implemented strictly and students are free to move in and out of the hostel all day. Most students go out to play badminton in the badminton courts, others play cricket or football as there are well maintained stadiums for cricket and football. There are basketball and volleyball courts as well for the students.
