What Students Say
Likes
- The campus is quite huge with a very diverse crowd. Moreover, the location has several advantages due to the presence of multiple other colleges in the same vicinity. This makes it easier to meet like minded people.
- Most of the faculty is highly qualified having a very vast knowledge base. Most professors show keen interest in the overall development of the students and tend to involve themselves amongst the students.
Dislikes
- The absence of clubs and socities is a major con. Tech clubs are one of the most important aspects of any engineering college and its absence can severly hinder the efficiency and the potential of the students.
- The crowd, being diverse, has students from very different sections of the society. This makes it difficult to socialise considering many of these students have not received much formal education.
- The administration department lacks professionalism and doesn't pay much heed to the needs of the student. Considering the amount of fees being paid, the services that are offered are definitely not upto the mark.
Course Curriculum Overview
The curriculum is decent enough and provides a load of options to the students to chose from. The electives include courses like English, finance, communication skills, vedic mathematics, constitutional hierarchy etc. The reason behind my selection of this particular branch is because of my personal interest in electronics. Growing up and having an easy access to a computer also led me to develop interest in various tech related fields especially the android development environment. The curriculum is indeed very aligned to the interests of the students. What it lacks is proper execution as a few faculty members tend to ignore what is mentioned in the curriculum and teach something vastly different just because it tends to save time. The ECE Batch is divided into two classes, namely A and B with a strength of 65 students each. This division allows for one on one interaction between the faculty and the students. A similar distribution is followed in the Computer Science Batch. The Electrical branch however contains only one class of around 80 students. The mid term examination, as the name suggests, occurs in the middle of the semester. This is followed by continuous assignments and a couple of surprise tests whose frequency and number depends upon the respective course mentor. The end semester examination occurs at the end of the semester. This sufficient gap and an additional preparatory leave allows students to prepare well for the final examination of the semester.
Internships Opportunities
Being the second batch to this college, there is not much to say about internship opportunities. The second year students (the only batch apart from us) did do a few unpaid internships in the north campus arena thanks to professors like Unmesh Sir. However, the experience gain was minimal. They do aim to crack a few internships here and there especially around the Delhi region during the summer break at the end of the second year. As for as the first year's are concerned, we definitely arent much hopeful about it but the students do seem conerned about the laziness of the admin department considering that socities are a keyplayer in developing a strata which attracts internship opportunities. The entire point of choosing Delhi was becuase of the wider oportunistic base but the sheer incompetence of the admin department and their inability to excavate this potential has developed serious concerns in the minds of students of both the batches.
Fees and Financial Aid
The yearly fees has an increasing trend over the entire 4 year duration of my course. The breakdown with yearly increments is as follows: 1. Tuition fees 1,12,000 - 1,17,600 - 1,23,480 - 1,29,655 2. University fund 18,000 - 18,900 - 19,845 - 20,835 3. Student fund 10,000 - 10,500 - 11,025 - 11,575 4. Development fund 1,200 - 1,260 - 1,335 - 1,400 5. University charges 20,600 - 21,630 - 22,700 - 23,845 6. Faculty charges 62,000 - 65,000 - 68,355 - 71,770 7. EWS support fund 200 - 210 - 220 - 230 8. DUSU fund 00 - 00 - 00 - 00 Total 2,24,000 - 2,35,200 - 2,46,960 - 2,59,310 There is no provision for scholarship but there is fee concession on economic basis. 50% fee waiver for students belonging to less than 8 lakh per annum household income and 90% fee waiver for students bellonging to less than 4 lakh per annum household income. The fees is definitely affordable for most and the fee waiver encourages students from weaker financial backgrounds to enroll for admissions.
Campus Life
Like I said, there is absolutely no clubs nor any socities. This severly hinders the potential of students like myself who were very keen to invest their time in skill development activites like coding and photography. The absence of socities is hard felt as most of the compitetive activites are brought to the instiution by these bodies. The university library is absolutely gigantic and is easily comparable to most IIT's. A vast range of books are available on any topic one can think about. The classrooms are modern with digitals boards, fingerprint attendance scanners, cameras, excelllent quality lab equipment, lifts and tight security. Absolutely no complaints when it comes to infrastructure. Sports and other extracurricular activites are almost negligible due to the absence of clubs. However, we are allowed access to the university sports complex which is more than sufficient at the moment considering the fact that this sports complex is one of the best in the country and has hosted many international events. It has almost all sorts of sports ranging from badminton, swimming, football, cricket to archery, shooting, basketball etc.
Admission
Just like any other engineering student, the goal was always cracking an IIT. Apart from the JEE Mains and Advanced Examinations, i appeared for a few private institutes as well like BITS, VIT, MIT, KIIT and also for the MHTCET Examination for the engineering colleges within Maharashtra. I lacked preparation for the Advanced Examination and thus couldnt secure a rank good enough to crack the top 8 IIT's. I finally settled for the Vellore Institute of Technology, Bhopal Campus with Core Computer Science Engineering. The entire admission process was complete but I decided to withdraw after i was allotted a seat here in the Faculty of Technology, Delhi University. The major parameter for comparison was the location followed by the level of exposure and the scope of opportunities offered. Moreover, the restrictive environment of VIT was a deal-breaker. The admission procedure to FoT was relatively simple. They take admissions on the basis of the rank an individual secures in the JEE Main examination. One thing to be noted though is the fact that it requires a separate registration for seat allocation as this college isnt affiliated to JOSAA.
Faculty
Most of the faculty members are highly qualified. They have a very vast knwoledge base and have a significant experience in the teaching field. They are indeed very approchable and appreaciate students who tend to take efforts on their own and are pro active. They appreciatre these students irrespective of what skills they wish to develop, be it either academics or any other skills like hacakthon participations, coding contests, graphic designing or even sports. The professor of the course Fundamentals of Computer Programming (FCP), Mr. Unmesh Shukla is an excellent mentor who not only has an excellent reputation for teaching, but also helping numerous students at the backstage even if their concern isnt related to computer technology. I continuosly use the word "most" as there do exist teachers who, despite their qualifications, have an extremely linient nature and dont tend to care much about the students. They take teaching as a nine to five job and thus they arent really supportive towards students. The structure is divided into 6 courses and 3 labs. Of the 6 courses, 3 are core subjects, 2 are electives and the last is the ability enhancement course. The grading system is based upon three fundaments: 1. internal assesment 2. continuos assesment 3. end semester examination The internal assesment includes grading based upon the students performance in the mid term examination, class interaction, attendance and other interactive objectives which the professor deems necessary. The continuos assesment includes grading based upon the continuos class tests, surprise tests and the various assignments given out during the entire duration of the semester. The end semester examination is of 90 marks (for the core subjects). It lasts for 3 hours, contains 6 questions out of which 5 are to be done. The difficulty level of mid term examination - 3/5 The difficuly level of end term examination - 5/5 (higher the number more the difficulty)
Night Life
The nightlife is practically non existent. No hostels mean we have to stay either in personal homes or flats or rent out PGs in the nearby localities. The nightlife in these areas is sound enough though. This is because these areas are primarily occupied by students and thus restaurants, cafes, gyms, libraries, game zones etc remain open throughout the night. There are numerous areas surrouding the north campus like Kamla Nagar, GTB Nagar, Roop Nagar etc which have a very high student population and most of the flats in these localities have been rented out to students pursuing graduation, post graduation and even doctorates.
Other Applied Colleges
VIT Bhopal University | Bachelor of Technology [B.Tech] (Computer Science and Engineering)
The most prominent reason was Delhi, as a city, provided more opportunities with a wider base for development. Moreover, the VIT Campus seemed very restrictive with no off-campus exposure.
