JNU, Master of Arts [MA] (Disaster Studies)
Reviewed on Jan 2, 2025(Enrolled 2024)

Course Curriculum Overview

5

The upcoming relevance of disasters in the times of climate change makes it very appealing. The curriculum gives practical knowledge of Law, ICT Technologies and Health related aspects. It also provides skilling in GIS and Remote Sensing. The examinations are not held through traditional methods, but are interesting and fun.

Internships Opportunities

4

Internships information are disseminated to students by official email of JNU. The centres also have tie ups with government agencies like NIDM, NDMA, Ministry of External Affairs, and NITI Aayog. Students can opt for internships of their choice through Internship cell also.

Placement Experience

2

The centre does not specifically offer placements but the University clubs help students with the same. Placement rate at the centre is low due to most of the students preferring to pursue a PhD degree after Masters.

Fees and Financial Aid

I paid a total of Rs 385 as semester fees when I enrolled in. Hence, extrapolating that to year, the yearly tuition fee sums around Rs 800 maximum. There are no other charges on the academic account. Hostel fee is paid separately. There is a scholarship available for students which is called Merit Cum Means based scholarship, it provides upto Rs 2000 monthly.

Campus Life

5

Overall experience of JNU's cultural life is very nice. There are a whole lot of events happening every week. Talks, Seminars, DJ Nights, Freshers, and Farewells are open to people to join and enjoy. These are held all round the year. Library has lakhs of books available. Most prestigious journals like Nature, Science are available. Classrooms are equipped with Projectors, SmartBoards and some have air conditioners too. Campus offers a good stadium with most of the games available. Also, each hostel has its own playgrounds too. There are clubs like Taekwondo Club, Environment Club, Poets Society, and many more.

Hostel Facilities

3

Hostels are good in terms of facilities. But maintenance is poor. There are frequent complaints of seepage in monsoon period due to old infrastructure. Rooms are provided with Bedsheet, Lights, Fan, Cupboard, Study Lamps and Study Tables. Meal quality is very good except a few hostels like Mahi Mandavi, Narmada, etc. Hostel is opted for during the application process online. After the hostel list is out, you have to go to IHA and get papers to submit to Hostel caretaker.

Admission

I did not apply to other colleges. However, the center is considered better than other such centers because it is backed by NIDM and JNU is ranked at second in the India. The admissions are taken based on CUET scores. One has to apply to JNU after the CUET scores is announced. Cutoff of my course is usually at 48% marks. The admission experience was very nice and smooth.

Faculty

5

Faculty to Student Ratio is 1:10 in JNU and 1:5 in my center. Faculty is very approachable and maintains good relations with students. I like Dr Deep Narayan Pandey the most because he is very helpful to students in times of need. There are two Mid semester exams and one End semester exam. These are generally easier as these are prepared to test the understanding of the students not to fail them. Course curriculum is very relevant to modern needs.

Night Life

5

There are gyms in each hostel. Library is open 24x7. Public spaces are available 24x7. The campus is safe for female students. Guards are appointed around the campus. There are no curfew timings for hostels and campus. Famous hangout spots are Taflas, PSR Rocks, KC Market, Admin Stairs, JNU Caves, Tapti Lawn, etc.
