What Students Say
Likes
- Good Infrastructure of boys hostels (I do not know about the girls hostel but it is similar), mess, academics block, laboratory complex and library.
- Faculty is knowledgeable in their domains and, if studied with heart, they really do teach well.
- The gym is arguably the best in our campus. It contains almost every machine for individual muscle groups. Recently they have installed AC in our gym. And the sem-wise fees is only 250/-.
Dislikes
- The campus is good but the ground maintenance should be improved. For eg, the football ground is not covered in grass and contains mostly small stones and pebbles which is why the football players face unnecessary wearing off of their studs.
- Frequent problems of power cut and LAN issues. Creates big problems during exams. Also the college is in the outskirts of Chennai, so sometimes network problems of SIM also occurs.
- College is situated in the outskirts, hence sometimes it becomes difficult for shopping and travelling purposes.
Course Curriculum Overview
I am in ECE. So for anyone wanting to pursue ECE as their professional career, the courses are very well-designed. With the help of faculties, you would really enjoy learning. And the best part is the hands-on experience every next sem. So, the course whose theory you study in sem x, sem x+1 will have the lab course of the same theory course. This is really nice. I am personally into software side but whenever I would invest myself in the ECE labs, my concepts (in ECE) would get clear totally. The TAs help you as well. Any doubt you ask them will be resolved. Only problem is you need to either maintain a lab record weekly or submit a printed copy of the pdf file as report. It depends on the faculty.
Placement Experience
In our 6th sem, companies start to come for internship roles, around march-april. And for full-time roles, companies come in both 7th and 8th sem. Sometimes, these companies also come for internship roles to offer 5th sem students, like Accenture in 2024. In our college, big companies hardly come for good package (above 15 lpa). Every year, around 5-6 companies come for this package range, mostly for CS students. Then other companies also come like NVIDIA, AMD, Accenture, Infosys, Zoho, Quantrium, and others as well. You can see the whole data at colleges website.
Fees and Financial Aid
Since I am a general male student pursuing B.Tech, our fees is typically the highest, being around 99k per semester. This includes 60k as tution fee, 4.8k as medical fee and 34.5k or something as our hostel and mess fee combined. I am currently in my final semester and typically, this distribution of fees has remained approximately the same. Our college does provide scholarship through NSP. Some of my friends have received good amount of scholarships. For other categories like SC and ST students, the fees is generally less than us, being in the range of 30k to 45k per semester.
Campus Life
The cultural fest id called Samgatha and technical is called Vashisht. They are mostly held together with a month gap or so. Around March-April. The library is very good, every year they are increasing their capacity and variety of books. Interested students often go to library to read such journals and books. The classrooms are provided with blackboard and chalk, with a computer and projector. Sports are really good in our college. Everyone admires it and we are performing better as we won Inter-IIIT 2024 and came second in Inter-IIIT 2023. The clubs are good as well. The MARS club, SAE club and AUV club are performing the best.
Hostel Facilities
I have already provided the details of hostel and mess. There is provision for guests in the guest house in our college. You need to fill a form and the timeline of staying. I am not sure about the locality for a rented room or PG, but the chances are less of getting one as its not in the city.
Admission
Well, I got this college through CSAB. In JoSAA, I was disqualified for being late for fee payment in the first round itself. Then in CSAB, I did apply for other colleges, IIITs, NITs, GFTIs, etc. In the first round, I got NIT Srinagar in IT. But I waited for the next round and then I got IIITDM Chennai. In my early years, I used to cuss this college a lot. With the conditions at the post-covid time, no freshers, hardly any fests and discrimination, I used to hate my life. Then I talked to some of my friends in other colleges and then I realised that this college, although with a smaller campus of only 55 acres, is still trying its level best. A lot of reforms are seen in the past 2 years. Having 2 different caterers in the mess, freshers night, increasing budget of clubs and fests, it's like I have seen the college raise its standards. As for admission process, there is like a week or 10 days period for all the document verification work. After this, the students are alloted their time tables and they can daily go to classes. It's straight forward actually.
Faculty
I am not sure on the exact ratio. Faculty to student ratio would be from 1-40 to 1-60, given typically this is the size of a particular batch. There are a couple of faculties which I liked with whole-heartedly. They are namely Dr. Uttam pal, Dr. Srijith K, Dr. Mandha D Selvaraj, and a couple of their TAs. They have helped me through the course when I would not perform well. Not just with me, they have helped everyone. Uttam sir and Srijith sir recently helped me to attempt my end-sem exam 1.5 hours earlier in the morning, since I had a flight at 11:30 and the exam would end at 12:30. Mandha sir has been constantly motivating to the students. There are other faculties as well which I like but I cannot take everyone's name. Overall, almost every faculty is above average, in terms of helping nature, ALMOST. Then there are certain faculties that hate north indian students. Some of them are Dr. SivaSelvan and Dr. Priyanka Kokil.
Night Life
The main gate entry is closed at 10pm everyday and it starts from 9 am. If you have special permission from the wardens, you can show it to the guards and you can still go out in the off-times. Gym timings are 4-9 both morning and evening, all days of the week. Cafeteria is mostly open from 7am to 9:30 or 10pm. Its menu changes throughout the day. Library timings are from 9am to 10pm. And is closed on sundays and public holidays. The hostel timings are the best. They were initially 10pm for boys and for girls I think 8 or 9pm. But now it has increased to 12 am for both. Couples hangout after dinner in the ground or in the campus. But you still need to take care of PAD. We recently have got a Night Canteen, whose timings are 8pm to 2am.
