Course Curriculum Overview

5

The course curriculum of the college balances between theoritical knowledge and practical application. Subjects basically includes Criminal Law, Constitutional Law, etc, which provides a student with a solid foundation in essential legal principles. International Law and Intellectual Property Rights, these kind of subjects are also included, offer the flexibility to explore niche areas based on one's interest. The inclusion of internship opportunities, moot-courts in the curriculam influences many students to enroll in the program. These provides hands-on-experience to the students helping to bridge the gap theoritical concept and practical-world applications. The course is structured in a way where students are prepared for various career paths like judiciary, litigation, corporate world etc. Practical experiences, internship opportunities provides exposure to legal drafting, courtroom procedures and interaction with clients. Increase in the number of workshops on legal works, negotiation, mediation and arbitration, would prepare the students for better professional scenarios. The examinations are held at the each of end semester, with internal exams which are held periodically throughout the semester. The difficulty of the exams is moderate to high, depending on the subject. Subjects like Constitution, CrPc, CPC are often considered challenging but subjects like Family Law etc are comparitively easier for most of the students.

Internships Opportunities

5

Internship oppurtunities are provided to the students from the college. Recently, the college provided opportunity at Harvey Legal LLP,Kolkata, for the role of legal intern. The stipend is not disclosed unless joined. Even if it is an unpaid opportunity it is quite helpful as it provides huge exposure to the legal world. Tasks like Legal research, Legal drafting are given to the students as their assignments.

Fees and Financial Aid

The fee structure differs for each of the year. Average fees for each semester is around Rs. 6500. The admission fee is around Rs. 8000-10000. At the time of admission, students has to pay the admission fee along with the first semester fee. Fees is almost same for all the categories. But scholarships are provided as well as financial aids as well. Scholarships provided by the government are provided by the college. SVMCM is mainly provided to the students who are meritorious but are unable to afford. Around Rs. 12000 to Rs. 60000 per year is provided to the students.

Campus Life

5

Campus life focuses on the vibrant interactions among the students. From organized events to informal gatherings, there is a strong sense of community. The college fosters acommunity where students engage in various debates, discussions and various social events. They organize socities like Moot-Court Society, Legal Aid Cell, Debate Club etc. They help the students to enhance their legal and communication skills. Various college fests and socials are organized to engage the students as well. The college library is the epitome of legal resources, various books, e-resources and journals. There is still a touch of tradition in the classes but now to modernize the campus as well renovations are also taking places now. THese experiences collectively enrich college life, balancing professional as well as personal growth.

Admission

One of the most important reasons for opting for this college is because it is one of the most oldest and prestigious colleges in India. Its rich history and its association with numerous notable- alumni gives it an edge over many new age institutions. Unlike private universities like Amity or Symbiosis, this college is highly affordable while maintaining its academic standard. One of the reason I chose this college for its cost-effective tuition and merit-based unbias admission. The location of the college was also a good factor as it allows me to stay coser to my house, reducing expenses. The location being it a metropolitan city, offers good exposure to different law firms, high courts etc, enhancing practical learning. To be honest, I always wanted to take admission to this particular college. The admission process is that, the minimum eligible criteria is 10+2 or equivalent with a minimum of 45% marks (40% for reserved categories). No upper age limit as per current BCI guidelines. An entrance exam is held where students are ranked based on their scores, the admissions are granted as per the availability of seats.

Faculty

5

The faculty members are crucial and pivotal in shaping the academic journey of the students. The professors try to maintain a healthy professional and friendly relationship with the students. They help in fostering a conducive and better environment for learning for the students. The professors are highly educated, having highly prestigious degrees and impressive professional experience. The college makes sure that the students get a blend of theoritical knowledge and practical knowledge which is vital for legal education. Particularly, there is no professor who is liked by everybody as all the professors are so good, one cannot select a particular faculty member as the best. All the professors adapt to modern teaching method, like practically teaching to the students , conducting workshops etc. There is no such professor who is not liked by any student as all the faculty members are very good. The course structure is comprehensive and designed to provide proper foundation in legal studies. College arranges moot-court as well various competitions for the students. Examination system is structured in a way where both theoritical as well practical knowledge should be applied. Exams are moderately challenging where it requies deep understanding of legal concepts as well critical and analytical thinking. The marking schemes is quite transparent which focuses on depth of analysis and clarity of the concepts. If students write the answers a bit clearly then only they can secure good marks.

Night Life

5

The college library is a treasure trove of legal journals , vast range of books, legal resources and e- resources. Students may also have access to international legal databaseslike SCC Online and Manupatra, making research more comprehensive. There is a gym present in the college, but with few equipments for basic exercises only. The college has its own canteen which makes delicious as well as healthy foods at a very affordable price. The college does not have any hostel facility but due to its location students can get affordable hostels and PGs nearby. College Street is one of the most oldest and nostalgic places of Kolkata which is very close to the college campus. The locality near the college is quite safe to roam around at night but its better to be safe from our own side.

Placement Experience:

Number of students who have been placed is far less than what it should be ideally. Kolkata is a paradise for law practice as it is the largest city of India and lawyers have always been in demand here. Still only 30% of the students are placed here and that's a big issue considering the name of our college.

The main thing that I love about the curriculum is that we need to study in depth. Our syllabus contains most basic to really professional level stuff which really help us prepare for real life experiences and further academic pursuits. The only change i would like is more practical experiences that would be helpful.

Hence. later I found very boring and monotonous in the first year of its syllabus. After having 3 years of immense syllabus, I have finally fall in love with subject in the final as my beloved IR(International Relations) subjects finally came into my life.
