My college life as an aspiring economist

During my 3 year course in Economics I got to study a good amount of subjects(almost 15). The course was overall good but I felt that it did not make me job ready . The education system does not provide the students with skills which the employers look for. We are often indulged in just books and theories and hence there is no skill development. This was the biggest con.

I studied BSc Hons in economics(2021-2024) in Gokhale Memorial Girls College which comes under Calcutta University. The per annum fees was around 13000-14000. There were various scholarships provided by the govt to many students like Kanyashree, SVMCM etc.

Even thought we had a small campus, the college gave opportunities to participate in events, workshops, social events, sports, fests etc. the library was very good and we even had separate department libraries where all books were weee available for us .

The admission procedure of the college was easy . It was particularly based on merit, upon the marks of my class and 12. I got admission in many other colleges but I opted for this one as the economics faculty was talked about a lot and also that it was a girls college.

In my economics department there were around 25 students and 5 teachers. All teachers had specific areas of expertise. We followed the Calcutta University's CBCS system. My faculty was very good. I had Maths and English as my general subjects and those faculties were also nice. We had two internal exams- Internal and tutorial. Internal was basically a test of 10 marks based on the whole syllabus of the semester and tutorial was basically vivas, paper presentations, practical etc. According to me the marking system was good and people scored well.
