What Students Say?
Likes
- The college culture here is out of the world, every thing here is attached to some interesting lore. Be it the hall GC, different clubs &sports , places or department. You feel a sense of strong community in each thing. Overall people connect well.
- Innumerable count of sports facilities available here. Any random sport you wanna play, you'll find it here surely. The college strongly focuses in the all round exhaustive development of a individual. Everyone here is associated with a sport.
Dislikes
- Hostel accommodation: It's the same problem in all old iits, though IIT KGP provides the best accommodation in top 5 atleast, It's still isn't premier institution of a nation type. You'll be disappointed if you compare it other countries top Uni.
- Cheating the system. Many people here make fake certificates of obc-ncl pwd or even st/sc and there isn't a rigourous on that so it just kills the peer group, for which iits are famous for.
Course Curriculum Overview
I liked Electronics and Electrical curriculum so I chose Instrumentation which is basically a amalgamation of the two. Instrumentation branch is a circuital branch so you'd be well off in placements which was another reason for me. The curriculum is very much improving and there are many AI and ML courses that we can apply in core engineering or other pursuits . If the professor: students ratio in lectures would increase it would make better the classroom feel. One series of exams per 1 month.
Internships Opportunities
The internship season starts in 5th semester for the 4 year programs in UG. 700+ internships are offered and different roles/postion are available so a student can try the field which suits best with him. Though the IT/CS roles are more in number there are still other profiles in consultancy and core engineering. You can expect around 1L+ stipend to be a little bit better than average.
Placement Experience
Students become eligible for placements from the 7th semester for the 4 year program. 100+ companies visit and make 1600+ offers. Visiting companies include FAANG , hft/firms and core engineering companies like Texas instruments/Nvidia. Highest package was of 1.68cr and avg package ranged from 15-20 lakh 80%+ were placed in UG program I haven't decided particularly if I should do masters or prepare for job or go for other venture as the college provides good enough safety net for each thing

Campus Life
The annual fest SPRINGFEST is held in January and the technical fest Kshitij is also held in January. IITKGP hosts the one of the largest and most automated library in Asia, the books are easily accessible to everyone. All classrooms are spacious and have centralised ac ,and are comfortable to sit for long lectures. The college is filled with sports and extra curricular activites Under technology gymkhana there are 40+ clubs/society and numerous unofficial clubs
Hostel Facilities
The rooms here are triple sharing which might seem off putting at first but in first year your roommates are the ones you strongly bond with. There are three beds three study tables three cupboards and three fans and one attached balcony Mess is decent enough though you might find it a little boring at certain times . Hostel is very affordable and registration process was straight forward.
Admission
I chose this college as this is obviously IIT KHARAGPUR and I was getting a good branch I was interested in, so it just ticked every box. I also considered IIIT H cse but I thought the experience there would just be too hectic for me and NIT Warangal trichy too but circuital IIT beats NIT cse anyways. I got rejection from IIT bombay cse ( Yes quite the shocker ik yes) I couldnt make it there because I didn't prepare for JEE from my previous life :( . The admission process for BS/BTech courses are through JEE Advanced and nothing else from what I know. The admission experience was smooth enough with no hiccups and the management here was also helpful. Also prepare your category certificate if you have any before the registration, I saw many students having problems on the day of physical registration. If you are applying from open category the process is much smoother
Faculty
In the first year where many courses are common in different branches the room often consists of more than 200+ students but in the departmental courses the ratio improves and it varies for different departments. The faculty here is very approachable, you can approach them right after the class or email them asking for some time. The first year professors who I had the privilege of meeting, were all good. A.K. Pradhan Sir of electrical department and Atul Jain Sir of mechanical department were my favourites. There are faculty here that I strongly disliked, atleast till now. There are class test, quizes, tutorial and most importantly midsems and endsems. Many category students fail to clear the exams Curriculum falls short in many cases of relevancy but IIT KGP is substantially trying to improve in that matter.
