Course Curriculum Overview
Being a doctor is one of the most noble profession, and getting to learn how to cure someone is what made me take up this course. Curriculum is well planned by NMC, and it caters all aspects and not just regular theory classes but also SDL's (self directed learning), practical classes , clinical posting classes, FA's etc. All these help in holistic development of mbbs students to become better Doctors in future. There are some areas of improvement like, more use of technology should be inculcated along with real life scenarios based teaching, teaching of basic medical skills should be emphasised more. Classes for co-curricular activities should be inculcated. Exams are taken every quarterly at college level, and final exams at the university level by Jammu University. The written exam is of 100 marks and timing is of 3 hours. Exams are not that tough if one studies consistently throughout the year.
Internships Opportunities
Internship of 1 year post mbbs is mandatory for all mbbs students, currently a stipend of 12500 is given monthly which is expected to rise shortly. College even provides opportunity to foreign medical graduates to join for internship in hospital.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fee Structure for the MBBS course is as follows:- 1st Year:- 26250 2nd year:- 9375 Pre final:- 6250 Final year:- 6250 Hostel fees:- 1500 Electricity charges (excluding AC):- 2000 AC charges:- as per use College subscriptions: Games fee, identity card fee, Library card fee, Annual day fee, College magazine fee, Terminal examination, Lab fee, etc. are all provided at 1200 per year.
Campus Life
Overall experience with campus life is good, there are many cultural and sports events that happen early. Sports Week is celebrated every year around the first week of November. Students are facilitated for their performances. A cultural fest occurs by ending of year, in which different performances are prepared by students and teachers too. Ted talks are organized in summers, Independence Day celebrations to farewell and freshers. A sports complex is being set up for college students along with a ground outside it. All equipment for various sports are available. Gym are being set up in both boys and girls hostel now. The gender Development committee is being operational in college. Student research and development committee is present where students get guidance to do research work. Almost all journals and books are available at the college library
Admission
To be very honest I didn't apply for any other colleges apart from GMC Jammu. Because in my state it's the best college for pursuing mbbs. Since it started operating in 1973, it has a history of high experience and high patient inflow as compared to other colleges like GMC Kathua, GMC Rajouri, etc. The teachers here are highly experienced as compared to any other college in the region. The exam required to be cleared before getting admission into mbbs course is NEET-UG. The cut-offs stay pretty high for General category students. This year in 2024 admissions, cut off for open merit was 667 for boys and 634 for girls in GMC Jammu. Overall admission process is not that difficult. One has to fulfill some requests which are enlisted by the college's student section every year, he's of them being a Transfer certificate from school, 12th mark sheet, Identify proofs, migration certificate, character certificate, health certificate, etc.
Faculty
Faculty to students ratio on average is 20:180 which includes lecturers and professors. Apart from this on average 25-30 post graduates are there in all departments which are next to teachers and mentors for mbbs students. Some of the best faculties are:- Dr Rachna Magotra, professor anatomy Dr. Sunil Sachdeva, Hod physiology Dr. Ratnakar Sharma, Hod surgery Dr. Fayaz Wani, Hod General medicine Dr. Zahoor Hussain, professor surgery And many more: These are one of the best doctors as well as teachers in northern India, are always there for their students to resolve all our doubts and provide best knowledge about their subjects. Terminal exams are conducted every quarterly, and right before University exams Send ups are taken, for final brushing up before prof exams. Exams are usually of 100 marks, 80 for written and 20 for mcq's. All these exams are accompanied with practical exams too. Passing ratio of exams is almost 95%; 5% give re examination and most of them pass in these.
