What Students Say
Likes
- The best thing is you get a lot of opportunities to network with other people.
- Guest lectures are often conducted where judges and advocates from all over India visit, sometimes even international personalities.
- The faculty is pretty understanding and helpful
Dislikes
- The curriculum can get very tiring as it demands a lot of your time.
- There is discrimination between the 5 year course and the 3 year course.
- There are way too many subjects taught in each semester to cope up.
Course Curriculum Overview
For me it was the various other subjects taught that you will not find in any other government or private colleges. Like - EU Law which can be taken as a specialization later on in your career. They have other co-curricular activities like Moot Competitions and MUNs that prepare you for real-world pursuits. I think the curriculum can be improved by keeping limited core subjects and other spevial subjects as electives to be chosen by the students. The exams are often very lengthy and there is 1.5 hours to write it.
Internships Opportunities
The College provides you with ample internship opportunities. Even tier 1 and 2 firms can be approached for internships through college references. However, to get it, you have to apply yourself and you cv should be good enough. Firms like trilegal, khaitan, AZB, Phoenix Legal etc offer internships which is mainly based around research work and drafting of legal documents. You usually do not get stipends for legal internships in the 1st and 2nd year, but you can get a decent stipend in your 3rd year.
Placement Experience
Students of the 3 year course become eligible for campus placements after the 4th semester. Firms like Khaitan and Co., Trilegal, AZB visit the college for placements. Highest packages have gone up to 12 lakhs per annum with average package being 8 lakhs per annum. Around 60% of students get placed. I plan to sit for collelge placements as I want to get into coporate law.
Fees and Financial Aid
Tuition fee can increase up to 10% every year. Complete cost for 3 year course - 9 lakhs for tuition and 5 lakhs for hostel for 2 years (hostel is not alloted in the third year) You can get special criteria scholarships like North-east resident scholarship which gives you a 20% concession on the tuition for each academic year. I am a part of the Student Advisory Board which is the main board under which mostly every other committee falls.
Campus Life
The most important fest of the college is Symbhav which is held in the month of April. It consists of a lot of activities like music, dancing, poetry and law theatre. There is a book bank availabe in the college for course books and the library is also heavily accomodated for other reference material. The online SIU library portal is one of the best, you get access to reputed sources like Bar and Bench, SCC Online, AIR Online, Jstor, HeinOnline and etc. Every classroom has a digital board and a projector, well equipped with benches and chairs and a mic and speaker system for the faculty. You can go for sports tryouts for sports like badminton, basketball, volley ball and etc. and become a part of the sports committee. Other committees like Law Hawks, Animal Liberation, International cell, career and development call can also be auditioned for. All the committees and cells are mostly run by students and are really benfitial for networking.
Admission
Eligibility for the 3 year course is a previoous graduation degree in any field. Application form is released on the official website every year in the month of March-April. Applicatin form fee - 1000 rs I did not avail any reservation benefits. The entrance exam AIAT is 1 hour 45 minutes long, conducted online, and it is not very difficult. you just have to be aware of the current legal developments. There is also a personal interview conducted online after you pass the written exam. The admission process is pretty reasonable.
Faculty
The faculty to student ratio is 60 students per faculty which is pretty normal for any private institution. The faculty is well educated and can be very helpful and understanding. They give out their personal contact info so it is very easy to get through to them whenever you want.
Interview Experience
A personal interview. Interview questions are mainly based on your CV and whatever you have done in your previous academic years. Some other questions can be asked about your area of interest in the legal field or recent legal developments around the country or some basic provisons of the legal framework in India, for eg - some important articles of the Indian Constitution. The process involves filling the application form, paying the fee for the form, appearing for the online conducted mcq exam which also includes a subjective essay of 40 marks. Total marks is 60. And after clearing this, you get a personal interview, also conducted online. I prepared by keeping up the recent legal news and by knowing my cv through and through so as to be able to answer anything asked related to it.
