Course Curriculum Overview
I choose structural engineering mainly due to the reason that it was the most sought after branch and has the best placement stats in all the disciplines of civil engineering. Some of the courses are pretty essential to understand the real world application. The projects and assignments provide exposure to the technology(software) used in the field. But I would like to add that a student will need to put more and more self effort as most of the professors are not very helpful. There a lot of improvements that could be done, I will just state two, first is that most of the professors rush the course making it difficult to develop a good understanding of the concepts. Second is that most of the classes could be more demonstrative in terms of taking up real world applications and use in engineering software. The class schedule is fine, not too hectic, the exams though start and end with in a span of a week.
Internships Opportunities
As a masters student we were not offered any internship. Some of the students however got into internships through their project guide's(professor's) connections. As for a bachelor's student, I can recall DE shaw and either Microsoft or Google was there. If you get an internship and are able to demonstrate your skills, you might get lucky be blessed with pre placement offer.
Placement Experience
My insights will be focussed on M.Tech A mtech student becomes eligible for campus placements from 3rd semester, as for btech i think its 9th semester. I can't enlist all of the companies that visited so I will provide a brief list mentioning the sectors of the companies. 1. L&T, Dar Al Handasah, Spectrum, ASEC.(Structural Consultancy) 2. Reliance, Bank of America, Volvo Eicher, Star Cement. (Management) 3. TATA 1mg, Google, Microsoft, Databricks. (IT) 4. Narayana, FITJEE, Pace, PW (Education)
Fees and Financial Aid
The tution fee for candidates who have secured admission through GATE the tution fee is only ?5000 per semester. The total semester fee including hostel, mess and other charges amounts to somewhere between ?35K-?37K. You can search for the fee breakup on IITG website. Presuming you have been admitted through GATE, a candidate will be offered a stipend of ?12400 per month for which he/she will be working Teaching Assistant (TA) under a professor. Generally there will be no TA duty for the first year of your course.
Campus Life
The events and fests are listed below Techniche- Technical fest conducted in September Alcheringa - The biggest college event which is of 3 days and 4 nights. Inter IIT sports meet- Held every winter at one of the IIT's where students from different IIT's compete in sports. There is a small library dedicated to every hostel and there's a central library which is huge with lots and lots of books. You will find almost every book related to your course work. I am not a sports person, but for a sports person you will have access to the cricket ground, basketball court, football ground, tennis court and gym.
Hostel Facilities
The hostel charge including mess, electricity and water charges amounts to ?25000 per semester. The rooms may vary from hostel to hostel. In the first year of the course a student will generally be living in double occupancy. The room will have a bed, tubelight & fan, bookshelf, reading table and chair, wardrobe. The quality of meal depends on your hostel, In my perspective the meal quality can range from mediocre to good.
Admission
Candidates who have qualified GATE are eligible, but you need a rank under 2000(GENERAL) to secure admission, it is preferable to have a rank under 1500. My rank was 1920, I got the offer in spot round. The application form for GATE should be available from the starting of September to the mid of October. The fee of the application form should be around ?1000-?1500. The admit card for the exam will be available by the first week of January and exam will be conducted in the beginning of February, results will come out in March. After the exam if you have secured a valid GATE score to secure admission into IIT's and IISc you will need to apply to the COAP portal, you will also need to separately fill the application form of the institutes of your choice. Then regularly check COAP Portal as per the counselling timeline. Also remember to check your email regularly some IIT's conduct an interview which will be conveyed through email.
