"Life at IIT Kharagpur" by a sophomore.

I opted to go for BS chemistry from IIT Kharagpur mainly because of the IIT tag and Kharagpur being one of the top 5 IITs in India. The curriculum is pretty manageable and insightful. One gets to learn and apply the concepts practically in labs. The teachers are very knowledgeable and supportive. Exams are held in two sets midsem and endsem. One should study regularly to perform well in the exams.

The internships offered by big companies are very less in number. Many students opt for research internships at Ivy League colleges and they are very beneficial in career prospects. Some of the companies that offered internships are Microsoft, Google, Goldman Sachs, Nvidia, Siemens, etc.

The placements at my college are pretty talked about and popular. Every year such news headlines are heard like "A student from IIT Kharagpur got a 4cr offer from XYZ company." If someone doesn't get placed then he has to look for off-campus offers, the institute doesn't help with off-campus offers. My plan after getting the degree is to sit for placements and hope for the best.

The fee structure is very transparent and reasonable. Numerous scholarships are available for students helping them financially. The banks are also very supportive of students by offering education loans at lower interest rates. We do not need to work part-time.

Campus life has been full of ups and downs be it regarding any social club or a tech society, it has many things to offer. The library has everything a student can ask for. Classrooms are equipped with the latest technology and infrastructure. Sports facilities are top-notch.

The hostel life is the most fun thing about campus life. We get all the facilities in our hostel and the rooms are also pretty good. The meals are way better than what we expected. The hostels are very affordable to us at such a reasonable fee.

The entrance exam is very competitive and demands hard work and persistence from the candidate. I started my preparation from 11th standard at a coaching institute in Indore. I practiced mock tests and strengthened my prep. Finally, I cleared Jee mains and got a decent rank in Jee advance. The admission process was a little tricky because I had to submit a list of my preferred colleges and according to my rank, I will obtain a seat in that particular institute. Luckily I got BS Chemistry at IIT Kharagpur. I availed of reservation benefits under the Gen-EWS category. Eligibility for Jee mains is that the student should have opted for maths along with science in his 10+2. Jee mains is held once a year and one can find its application form at NTA's website.
