Course Curriculum Overview
This course is one of the best courses in the field of ceramics and material sciences in the whole country. I chose this course as I was interested in learning about ceramics, their processing, industrial applications, high-temperature processes etc. In the first year, all students of all branches undergo a common curriculum i.e engg mathematics, engg physics, basic electronics engg, basic electrical engg, computer programming etc. From 2nd year onwards branch-specific courses start, along with core industrial subjects we are also taught subjects like probability statistics, Matlab, Simulink etc which help in adapting to the informatics of material sciences. There are almost 50 students including btech and a dual degree in ceramics in every batch and around 17 teachers. So it's almost 1 teacher who has 3 students i.e. 3:1. The exams are held twice a sem i.e. mid-semester and end-semester and also a summer semester only for back papers. The exams are fairly difficult and require thorough concepts.
Internships Opportunities
Students become eligible for internships after completion of 3rd year. Many reputed organizations like Salesforce, Saint Gobain, calderys, Microsoft, reliance etc visit for on-campus internships and give a good amount of stipend. Students are regularly trained by the training and placement centre to prepare for interviews, coding tests, aptitude tests, case studies etc to achieve these internships. The stipend is also pretty high here with the highest being around 125000 in some cases.
Placement Experience
Students from the 7th semester become eligible for placements (for btech) and the 9th semester (for dual degree). Various companies from almost every department like software, analytics, oil gas, semiconductor, VLSI design, machine learning, industries, core, PSUs etc visit. Some renowned names include amazon, Accenture, reliance, tata etc. Students are placed at a pretty good package the average being 10-12 lpa, the highest being 50-60 lpa and the lowest being 6-8 lpa. Almost 90-95% of students get placed and the rest go for higher studies in various reputed institutes. I have planned to take placements in the analytics domain after my degree. There is a training and placement cell which consistently trains students to check their preparations for each domain.
Fees and Financial Aid
The academic coursework fee is around 80000 per semester and the hostel along with mess charges is 15000 per semester. So the total cost is around 100000 per semester and additional fees are applied if one stays and pursues courses during summer. SBI provides scholar loans to aid financial assistance during studies for studying in top-tier colleges like NITR. On top of that various scholarship programmes like post-matric scholarships, top class scholarships, merit scholarships, national talent scholarships, Indian oil scholarships, ONGC scholarships etc are provided by various industries and government policies to deserving and meritious students. Internships usually come at the start of the 5th semester and on average give a stipend of around 30000 per month the highest being around 125000 per month to selected students. Placements are pretty good here if one has the required skills one can easily land into a high-paying ctc either in the field of core, analytics or software.
Campus Life
Social life is pretty good on the campus with the availability of numerous clubs for almost every interest and domain along with regular participation in various intercollege fests. Our institute hosts a techno-management fest named Innovision, a multi-ethnic fest named Cosmopolitan and a cultural fest named NITRUTSAV. Along with it, there are also a lot of events conducted by clubs going on throughout the year like G20, seminars, webinars, short-term courses etc.
Hostel Facilities
Hostel and mess quality are very good at NIT Rourkela. The rooms are spacious enough to accommodate 2 students per room. There are almost 7 halls of residence for boys and 2 for girls. Food quality is good enough with a menu consisting of both veg and non-veg food with adequate options for each meal. The hostel and mess facilities are compulsory here. The locality is very calm and it's inside the college campus only. Hostels are allotted at the time of admission and then rooms are chosen by students on a first come first serve basis in some hostels and fixed schedule in some hostels. A student can mutually exchange his room with another student by writing an application to the chief warden. Each hostel has good cleanliness, hygiene, security and canteens as well as mess facilities. After every year students can choose to stay in the same hostel or to change the hostel. Each hostel also has a study room equipped with AC and also utility rooms to play indoor games or watch TV. In time is 12 am.
Admission
The admission takes place through JosAA and CSAB counselling every year on the basis of all India Rank received through Joint Entrance Examination (JEE MAINS). The eligibility is more than 75% in 12th boards with physics, chemistry and mathematics subjects and should have a valid JEE Mains rank and score. Only for 5 years in an MSc life science course, the eligibility requires having biology along with PCM in 12th. There are in general two attempts for JEE Mains every year and the best of two is considered for preparing a rank. Based on the rank the allotment of colleges is done. Once college is allotted through josAA or CSAB counselling, the candidate has to go for physical verification of submitted documents to the college. The student can either free, slide or float the choices in counselling rounds. Freeze means to accept the seat and get out of the counselling process. Slide means to forfeit the seat and exit the process. And float means to accept the seat but still participate further.
