Goa College of Engineering - [GEC], B.Tech, Electrical And Electronics Engineering
Reviewed on Sep 22, 2017

Remarks

GEC is a fair institution. Students who put in the work and successful now and students who didn't are still completing their degree.

Entrance Preview

GCET (Goa Common Entrance Test) Scored pretty low,but got the last electrical and electronics seat (parents were happy) Opted for GEC as it is the most recognized college for engineering in Goa

Course Curriculum Overview

4

Detailed and well managed. We were introduced to right topics at right times. For example circuit theory which is thought in third semester was the base that was needed to understand linear integrated circuits in the fourth semester. Most teachers tried to generate interest for the subject in each student. Making us engineers not electricians was the main objective. But, due to lack of faculty not all electives were available, some just having one choice rendering the term "elective" useless. I personally would've liked to take industrial robotics but was stuck with special electrical machines.

Internships Opportunities

No it does not. But we are expected to find a suitable internship by our selves. Third year and Final year students are given extra holidays for this purpose. I personally used that time to catch up on YouTube videos and beauty sleep!

Placement Experience

2.5

Our college has the percentage structure and not the percentile structure which was a disadvantage. We had good companies coming to our college but so few students actually met the cut offs! Just one student was placed from electrical and electronics, one of my best friend, and he barely made the cutoff. Salary offered to him was comparatively high (6lac per anum) but the job was on site of a mine for a company called Vedanta.

College Events

5

TANDAV - Inter branch cultural and sports festival. Takes place over a week. Every year it is threatened to be banned due to all the fighting and hooliganism (Still going strong) HAPPENINGS- Inter college cultural festival. Different colleges from Goa participate. Its one of the biggest in the state. Besides these major 2, we have minor technical events organised by each branch throughout the academic year. There's always something going on in GEC

Fee Structure And Facilities

GEC is an government aided institution. So the fee structures are the lowest in the whole state. The average fee per semester was around 17,000/- for general and if you belonged to a reserve category then the fee was 10 percent of that (around 2,000/-).

Fees and Financial Aid

Since the fee's are so low, there was no real scholarship or financial aid that people talked about. But I do remember girl students applying for some scholarship, but i am pretty sure that was gender specific and not merit.

Campus Life

2

Campus life is the best part of being a GEC student. The campus is huge and walking from classes to labs was better exercise than any gym. There is a good gender ratio in the college but unequal among the various branches. GEC is not very diverse as the 95% of the students are from Goa it self, and some of the rest 5% are from the north east. There is no real discrimination, but no real integration either. GEC has a football ground, cricket ground, table tennis tables, volleyball court etc etc. Also students who represented the college for sporting events got extra credit. I can only talk about the electrical labs and they were really good and the lab assistants were friendly let you work on equipment anytime!

Hostel Facilities

1.5

Hostel facilities were not up to the mark at all. Mainly as most the students of GEC are from Goa itself, every few actually stayed in the hostel. But most of the students had hostel rooms anyway, as they stayed during exam months. Each hostel room had 4 people, but they were specious enough to not be a bother. When i took the a hostel room in the final year it was around 4000/- for a room for one semester. The facilities may not have been perfect, but the hostel comradery, the "hostel life" is something i'll cherish for the rest of my life.

Alumni/Alumna

GEC alumni are active. Recently GEC celebrated 25 year jubilee and the alumni hosted many events such as 10km marathon, bicycle race etc. I can only talk about my seniors, and they were very helpful, from supplying us notes to talking to the HOD in order postpone/pre-pone our internal tests. Overall very approachable and friendly.

Exam Structure

Exam structure is horrible as one semester exam runs for a month! With atleast 3-4 days break between papers. So a lazy student like me just studied for those 3 or 4 days before each paper. Defeated the purpose of testing ones knowledge and in turn tested ones memory. And it worked, I graduated with Distinction and so did most of my classmates.

Admission

Dont remember exactly how i got to know about the application deadlines and such, probably by word of mouth. The GCET is pretty huge for Goan students and their parents, so my mother knew more about the exam before I did. Admission process was based on merit, in an ascending order students claimed seats in their respective desired branches. There were 3 such rounds held, I got my seat in round number 3, as a girl left her seat after round 2 to join fashion designing. Destiny or luck? I still dont have the answer.

Faculty

4

As mentioned before, most teachers tried to generate interest for the subject in each student. Making us engineers not electricians was the main objective. The third year and final year faculty was highly qualified. With most professors having at least some degree from IIT or IISc even PhDs from good colleges. But the second and some first year teachers were mostly employed on contract basis. For some teaching was a hobby not a profession. I often joke with my friend that i didn't know how to use a calculator before semester 3.

I have no clue but the highest placements are in Computer and IT branches. Civil has probably the least placement. The quality is good thanks to IIT and NIT being in the same campus thus the big companies that come to those colleges also come to our colleges but they prefer those students more because NIT and IIT are more prestigious colleges.
