Course Curriculum Overview

4.5

One of the reasons I opted for Biotechnology was to clear my basics in Biology and get ready for a career in research. One thing that was great about Joseph's were the labs. Despite it being a bit crowded due to the number of students in my class, the labs were designed to be project labs. We had the oppurtunity to come up with our own research questions and then use the facilities of institution to answer them. Most faculty in the biotechnology department have either industry or research experience. I quite enjoyed a lot of my classes on molecular and cell biology- particularly because we disscussed latest papers and literature on the field. We also took a course on "research methodology and scintific writing" - which was a good primer to how academia works.

Internships Opportunities

3.5

A lot of my classmate got plced at NCBS as thesis students, along with a few at thermofisher and other biotech startups. We were all encouraged to apply outside the college for our academic thesis. I currently am placed at Ashoka Uni for my Master's thesis.

Fees and Financial Aid

There is a management scholarship program for students. Also, a mid-day meal scheme. I did not avail any scholarships during my master's. I did do summer research internship at institutes outside Joseph's and was paid a stipend for the same.

Campus Life

3

Life on campus was always lively. There are fests happening almost every month - though Visages and Pratibha were the annual fests we lookedvforward to the most. I was quite fond of META - the literature fest that took place on campus. Lots of quizzes, JAM and debates. I was also part of Chiasma - the biotechnology society run by master's students.

Admission

The admission process is easy - you need to create a profile on sjc.ac.in and submit your marksheets. As I was in the covid batch my interview process was conducted online on zoom. I first interacted with faculty in a video call - and they asked me a few basic questions and my motivations for joining a course in biotechnology specifically. After that I had a brief conversation with the Dean before the interview was concluded. There was no entrance exam for my 2021 batch but the subsequent batches now have to write one.
