Remarks
The eligibility for MTech Biotechnology is to clear the GATE exam. The exam is conducted in February by different IITs every year. The information about the exams can be obtained from the official portal of the GATE exam for that year. The average cut-off qualifying marks for the Biotechnology stream vary from 28-35 out of 100. The application process generally starts in September.
Course Curriculum Overview
I chose this course because I always had an interest in the Biotech field and I wanted to work in the industrial Biotech sector. This course is designed in a manner that I can get hands-on experience with various lab techniques and exposure to the industrial sector. The student-faculty ratio is quite good at IIT Guwahati. There are a lot of faculties with expertise in different fields and you can get faculty in every field you are interested in. Most of the faculties have done Ph.D. or post-Doc in their respective fields and teach quite applied explaining the concepts. The exams are conducted according to the academic calendar and the exams are moderately difficult.
Internships Opportunities
The companies that visit for internships are Amazon, Cisco, Adobe, IBM, Bajaj Auto Ltd, HSBC, and others. The roles offered are for various profiles such as Analyst, Product Development Intern, Software Development Intern, Research Intern, and many others. The stipend offered ranges from 50000 -1.2 lakh per month.
Placement Experience
The students from the 7th semester for B.Tech & BDes and the 4th semester for MTech, MSc, MBA, MS, and MDes are eligible for placements. The maximum number of companies visited in the year 2021 was from the information technology and software sectors and the maximum offers were made for the computer science & engineering department students. The highest package offered in the year 2021 was 70 lakh per annum and the average package offered was 21.42 lakh per annum.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions
The fees of the course can be afforded by the teaching assistantship provided for post-graduate students. The students are allotted as teaching assistants for professors and required to do work such as checking papers or invigilation in exams. The stipend per month is INR 12400 from which one can easily afford the fees and personal expenses.
Campus Life
IIT Guwahati conducts a technical fest and a cultural fest in a year. The technical fest is called "Techniche" and it is conducted in September and the cultural fest is called "Alcheringa" which is generally conducted in February. The central library is the main library of the campus which is spread across a large area, well maintained, and equipped with a large number of hard-bound books and e-books. The classrooms at IIT Guwahati are smart classrooms with centrally conditioned AC and a large sitting area. The campus also has facilities for various sports such as cricket, football, badminton, swimming, etc. and all the hostels have a common game room with indoor games such as carrom, foosball, table tennis, etc. The student activity complex (SAC) is a separate building for all the student clubs such as electronics, robotics, dramatics, dance, music, art, etc.
Hostel Facilities
It is compulsory for students at IIT Guwahati to live in hostels. The students are generally provided with a two-sharing accommodation with beds, a cupboard, a table, and a chair. The food quality is quite good and healthy meals are provided. There are three meals provided in all the hostels - breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There is also a facility to change your mess subscription if you want to eat in the mess of some other hostel instead of yours. There is no separate registration process for the hostel and the hostels are allotted by the institute's administration but there is a provision for changing your room or hostel by filling out an online form.
