Flashback and review of a department which became family

OOE is an unique stream that combines the ambition of both Physics and Mathematics. B.Tech in OOE is only taught here in this University all over the India. Graduation in this field enables you to Aim for various other fields. Being a large University with 14 main campuses and 147 affiliate colleges, the administrative processes are really slow. To get a good placement you have to have good academic record along with practical experience. The no. The placement chances are increasing day by day in OOE branch due to the collective effort of its Professors and Placement cell.

The course curriculum is unique. It includes a Big part of Optics and Photonics part of core computer science, electronics. The Laboratory facilities becomes world class with the guidance of the Professors. It's Faculty includes world class scientists, research personnel. Faculty: student ratio is below the normal due to Government recruitment lags. Only three permanent professor are there, and there is 6-8 guest and retired faculties who are also contributing in teaching. The teaching methods are Very good for offline mode but in online mode depending on particular person it degrades or improves. Exams are scheduled to take place at a interval of 6 months but due to Covid 19 situation the interval was 4 months for final year students. Result are published generally after 1-2 months of exam.Scoring is little bit difficult in this domain if someone is irregular.

Research Internships are possible and there is huge opportunity in the field of Optics and Photonics. I haven't attended any internship program but many of my batchmates have completed their Intership in IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, different NITs, Jadavpur University, ISRO, CSIR, IIA Bangalore, PRL Ahmedabad etc.

The Final year (early 7th semester) students are eligible to take part in Job interviews and the pre final year students are eligible for taking part in the process of short term intership.TCS digital and ninja, Wipro Lighting, L&T limited, Accenture India etc are the major recruiter. Highest pancake offer in my department is 9.89 lakh per annum by Accenture India and the lowest is 3.2 lakh per annum by Itviz. Around 50-60% student gets selected for job other aims for higher studies. I am the only student from India who have been selected for Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree 'Europhotonics' program with Erasmus scholarship funded by European Union. My master's program includes a mobility in Aix Marseille University (Marseille, France), Karlsruhe institute of technology (Germany), Tampere University (Finland), Catalunya University (Barcelona).

The total tution fees in 8 semesters is approximately 31000/- INR and the total Examination fee is 4000/- INR. There is no fee hike even the University administration has waived off the tuition fees of 2021-2022 academic year. One can get financial assistance from the Swami Vivekananda Merit Cum Means Scholarship, National Scholarship, Jagadish Chandra Bose Scholarship etc. depending on their academic performance. University itself offers several Monetary award to it's meritorious students after graduation. depending on the scope of a particular field the Jobs opportunity differs. OOE has both the opportunity of Higher study and corporate jobs. The corporate Job offers include companies like Wipro Lighting, Qlight limited, Prism India, Itviz, Accenture India, TCS, L&T etc. Higher studies opportunities includes European Universities, as well as IIT, NITs. Evry year atleast 1-4 students gets selected for Higher study in Europe, USA with Scholarship. I have been selected for the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree Europhotonics program with Erasmus Mundus scholarship (after bachelor degree), which is a fully funded by European Union. It has a monthly stipend of 1000 for two years and 7000› travel allowance for two years.

Campus Life is more than better of what I expected. Each year an annual fest takes place in the month of September for the introduction of new students to the campus. It doesn't costs anything for the incoming students but the senior students takes the financial responsibility along with other responsibilities. The Tech fest started very recently on 2018, it takes place in March. Except these, each department individually arranges Reunion (has similar vibe like annual fest in a small scale, in the month of April). Along with that My department arranges large scale fest like program on the occasion of International Day of Light (16th May), Picnic (end January/early February), outreach (part of Optics and Photonics students chapter, throughout the year)etc. The university library is one of the biggest library in india, it has every books of its syllabus, out of syllabus, online journal, articles, Computer and internet facility in the library. The Technology Campus has its own small playground, which is enough for little cricket/football. But the campus is surrounded by three big Playgrounds, KB , KVKC, IB ground within 400 km of radius. Department of Applied Optics and Photonics has it's own Facebook and WhatsApp group for both alumni and students. We also have SPIE, OSA and OSI (international Optical societies) student chapter which conducts seminar, conference, outreach programs to spread awareness of Optics and Photonics.

The hostel facility is average. It is cheap and affordable for students, the food offered in the hostel is of Good quality. The monthly rent including current bill is nearly 1700. One should apply via the University website online. The availability of hostel room depends on the distance between your home and University campus. there is hostel in Rajabazar Science college campus, in the Ballygunge Science college campus etc. The PG rent are higher in Saltlake area but they provide top class facilities. The PG locations are near Saltlake stadium, near Sukanta Nagar , near Kestopur etc. (My batchmates used to live there, I used to travel from my Home).

Offline Councelling of Joint Entrance exam. The following Admission process includes payment of 1st semester tution fees, verification and submission of Related Documents and Registration at the University.
