Remarks
I applied through the NRI quota so I was exempt from entrance exams. Additionally, I had applied to The Oxford College of Science as well but chose Jain University instead because I liked their laboratories and they had good equipment. The minimum eligibility criteria were 60% in 12th std and good JET test results for students who were not availing NRI quota. A personal interview is also conducted by the department professors after passing JET.
Course Curriculum Overview
The University has many options for the BSc Life Sciences course. I chose Microbiology, Biotechnology, and Chemistry. Such flexible options aren't available that frequently anywhere else in Karnataka. I was also allowed to check out the campus, labs, and classrooms, and also interact with a few professors before my admission. There is an additional option of choosing elective subjects in the final year too. The choice of subjects is broad, ranging from maths, physics, multimedia applications, immunology, recombinant DNA technology, and many more. Students maintaining 80% throughout can also choose to do a dissertation instead of one subject. The faculty for biosciences is one of the best I have come across. They are extremely friendly and indulging and always encourage you to participate in extracurricular activities as well. The exams were conducted at the end of each semester, around May-June for odd semesters and Oct-Nov for even semesters. They aren't that difficult.
Fees and Financial Aid
Throughout my study, the fee wasn't hiked but it is a lot more expensive for NRI students. I sourced for unpaid internships myself but the chemistry department did also conduct research internships in other industries for the students.
Campus Life
Fests are very lively and big. We also attend other college's fests both in Bangalore and other parts of India. Running up to the fest, you have 1 week of continuous activities such as flash mobs, food trucks, themed dressing up, etc. The library is also spacious and has a lot of good relevant books. Unfortunately, there are no photocopy facilities within the campus. Classrooms are airconditioned with a projector. ACS doesn't always work though but since the climate in Bangalore is good, it's tolerable. There is a sports fest conducted twice a year and there are regular classes for Karate for those interested.
Interview Experience
Since I applied through the NRI quota I did not have to attend any PI or entrance tests. Usually, there is only a PI with the concerned department's faculty members. They assess your aptitude for the course and ask basic questions about your subject.
