Entrance Preview
I had appeared and cleared GATE, CSIR-UGC, ICMR and IISc entrance tests. My GATE rank was 87 and I also have cleared the remaining 3 exams I have mentioned above. I did not apply for any other institute, as I wanted to do my PhD here in this institute only. The reason behind choosing this institute is simple, "It's the best".
Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum is some thing very different which you can not get any where in the other institutes of this country. This extremely research oriented course curriculum. You have a wide variety of choice to choose the courses you are interested in.
Internships Opportunities
Yes it does. I think its 8 - 16 K per month for intern ship. I dont have a personal experience of this. But as per what I see, this is one place where an intern would definitely be exposed to scientific temperament. Its not so easy as well to come here for intern SHIP. They have to write, meet and convince the faculty.
Placement Experience
I do not have statistics about this. As per what I observed I have seen ME students getting offers ranging from 12-24 Lakhs per annum. Being PhD students from IISc, we generally do not look at campus placements. We look for post doctoral fellowships abroad to get trained in arena, come back and try to give back the nation what we can.
College Events
Apart from the regular scientific courses, workshops, lectures, seminars and symposia, we do have various events going on the campus. Some of them are here. Pravega: A fest organized by undergrads. Which is one of its kind uniting several institutes on a single flat form. Its a kind of scientific and cultural fest. It involves several thousand people participating in a span of 3 days. Sangham: The yearly starting ceremony which introduces the campus to the new. It involves about 3000 people roughly. Open day: A Saturday In the month of march every year. The campus is open for the public that day. You can come, watch, feel and enjoy the miracles of science. Over a lakh people visit the campus that day and some more.
Fee Structure And Facilities
Yes, its feasible. Fro PhD students its Rs.20K per annum. Where as for ME, M.Tech, Int.PhD, M.Des - Its Rs.14K per year. Where as for sponsored students the fee structure is little on higher side. And you can pay it in 3 instalments in total. SC and ST candidates have to pay even lesser amount. This includes emergency medical insurance, sports, gymkhana fee and many more.
Fees and Financial Aid
Students can avail a loan of 25K every year without interest and can pay it back in installments. GARP funding is another fund we can get if we are going for any conference or workshop abroad, it's about 1L per student that can be used in two installments.
Campus Life
Campus life is amazing. You would not realize that time is passing here. We do have various social organizations, clubs, adventure clubs, sports clubs, fashion clubs, music clubs, student agencies with different domains of interest that include both personal and public welfare. Some of them even go for open challenges in competitions. Gender ratio: Its not different from other places. Engineering stream is flooded with male population. Where as physical and chemical schools have relatively more population of female students compared to engineering but with higher number of guys with in the schools. Life sciences is one place male students are minority.
Hostel Facilities
Hostels are some thing that disappoints any one here. About 90% of the strength would get single occupancy rooms. The institute charges us room rent, etc etc and also deducts our HRA. The worst part here is the complaints and maintenance cell which is good for nothing. They dont bother about their duty. One of the worst of its kind. Room rent is Rs.650, maintenance charges are another Rs.600, amenities charges are another Rs.600. Mess is one of its best kind here. We have 2 south Indian and 2 north Indian messes. One of each is a pure vegetarian mess.
Exam Structure
It depends. Exams are always hectic here. And the labs are hectic in some cases, some times and chilled out as well in some cases and some times. I can not write more than this. If you want me to write 250 characters at least, I will just copy and paste it again and again. I can not write more than this. Admission
I had applied through GATE exam and also had written institute entrance test (discontinued after 2012). I was called for interview into 3 departments of which I wanted to join the Molecular Biophysics Unit where I am now. After clearing the 2 rounds of interviews and after getting selected for PhD course here, I had written and cleared CSIR-UGC NET and ICMR exams and cleared them as well. THe admission process here is very simple and straight forward. You would be called for interview if have at least one of the qualifications mentioned, then you need to clear 1 or 2 rounds of interviews based on the department.
Faculty
I am not qualified to assess the best faculty/scientists of this country. This statement is sufficient I think to describe them. Well experienced people with a passion on what they are doing. They are available all the time for discussion and for the benefit of students.
