Remarks
Punjab University has centralized admiasion for B.com. Students give first preference to GGDSD College. At my time in 2014 cut off for admission was 95.4% for non Chandigarh students. Non Chandigarh students have only 15% seats in Punjab University. So it is difficult for non Chandigarh students to get admission in GGDSD college. I was in general quota. On counselling day, students are alloted ranks based on 12th marks and are given college choice in priority of ranks. Students with similar score in 12th are given ranks based on 10th marks. Overall counselling is very systematic. Students need to pay fees depending on college they select at time of counselling only.
Course Curriculum Overview
B.com has some common subjects with CA courses so I selected B.com along with CA. Staff is very experienced and helpful. Most of staff is qualified at Punjab University affiliated colleges. There were about 60 students in each class and total of about 300 students in b.com in our college. Teachers are always on time. Even if a teacher is taking planned leave, they inform the students on time. Teachers take doubts regularly and even form whatsapp groups to keep in touch with their students. Notes are provided by teachers for theory subjects. Overall staff in experienced and co-operative.
Internships Opportunities
I heard about internships provided by companies in college but being busy with CA, I did not pay much heed to these internships. So not aware of internship programs. For my friends in other streams like BBA, internships were a big thing as they wanted to pursue MBA after college. Many companies in Chandigarh provide internships for college students. You can easily find internships in many companies in Chandigarh for stipends of around 5000 to 15000.
Placement Experience
In my last year of college, many companies visited for placements (I don't have the exact number). B.com students are not much interested in placements. Most of the students want to continue their studies after b.com so not much relevance is given to placements by b.com students. Big four firms arrived for placements but being a first-year student I was not eligible. Package offered is around 3-3.5 lpa. Me along with many other b.com students wanted to be CA. So prepared for CA exams after completing b.com.
Fees and Financial Aid
Fees for whole B.com is around 1 lakh or around 30000-35000 per annum. Books are easily available in the whole of Chandigarh which will cost around 2000 per semester. There was no fee hikes during course. Scholarship programs are available but unfortunately I am not aware of those. I don't think there is any on the campus job available (I may be wrong). But there NCC in college for those interested in army and they may be providing stipend.
Campus Life
There are several fests in college organized by the commerce, arts, and science department. Most famous of all is the annual fest by the art department. Several performances come every year. During my time in college, Kiran Kher was the chief guest. Punjabi singers like Jazzy B, Amrinder Gill, Jasmin Sandles came to the fest. The team of a student of the year movie came for promotions but that was before I joined college. There is a big library in college accessible to all students. Also, the college has a digital library for students and alumni. College provides various sports facilities but I was never into sports so not aware of this much. There are drama clubs, debate clubs, groups that organize flash mobs. College election is again a big event.
