Lesser departments and schools that facilitate maximum inter-departmental researchAdmission Process: GATE score for shortlisting for written test followed by a written test(syllabus of which is primarily of GATE syllabus of respective disciplines). Further shortlisting is done to call for a final interview based on the performance of the written test.Admission Schedule: Admission in PhD happens twice a year date of which can be seen on departmental/institute websites.
Course Curriculum Overview
I have chosen this course as PhD is a step forward towards training a future scientist.Faculty:Student Ratio: 16Qualification of faculty: Minimum PhD from a reputed institute in India/ abroad with post PhD experiences of many newly joined facultiesTeaching Method: Direct Instruction, Peer-assisted Learning, Project-based Learning, Flipped ClassroomTerm Exams: Term Exams are in timely manner as scheduled by the academic section of the institute beforehand starting an academic session, Quizzes and other internal exams are decided by the faculties individually according to his/her choice which provides higher flexibility to the faculty to design the course as per requirements. Difficulty of the exams are moderate to tough and depends upon professors, type of course etc.
Placement Experience
In the placement session 2019-20, a total of 147 companies from various sectors participated in therecruitment process. The total no. of students registered for campus placement in the year 2019-20 is 1060.The overall placement of B.Tech and B.Des students is 87.52%. For B.Tech and B.Des, the number oftotal job offers so far is 491 ( including PPO) out of 561 students.The overall placement of M.Tech and M.Des students is 51.84%. For M.Tech and M.Des, the number of totaljob offers is 183 out of 353 students.For M.Sc. programs, 11 students (Mathematics-8, Chemistry-3) have been placed out of 55 registeredcandidates.For Ph.D. programs, 5 PhD students (Physics-1, Civil Engg.-1, Chemistry-1, Computer Science and Engg.-2)have received job offers out of 85 registered candidates. This is mainly in the Research and Education sectors.Overall placement of all programmeps (B.Tech,B.Des,M.Tech,M.Des,M.Sc.MSR, MA, PhD) ?ÛÒ 65.28% If no placement is offered, graduating students manages to get a job through alumni contacts or professors.
Fee Structure And Facilities
Fee structure for each program is different. For PhD total fees is around 25000.00 INR per semester including hostel/mess charges. Scholarship to PhD students are provided either by MHRD/Institute or external agencies in some cases including different fellowships like PMRF,PMDRF etc. Most of the PhD students need to perform either teaching assistantships(TAs) to respective professors or in some cases research assistantships(RAs) to many labs and PIs.
Campus Life
There are many fests going throughout the year in the campus like techfest (Techniche [August End]), culturalfest (Alcheringa[January End]), esummit (Udgam), research conclave, sports meet(General Championship), Inter-hostel meet like Kriti (technical),Spardha (sports),Manthan(cultural) etc.Lakshminath Bezbaruah Central Library contains huge volumes of books, periodicals and e-resources along with subscription of reputed journals for facilitating state of the art research in the institute as well as helping students and faculties to carry out regular coursework requirements. Classrooms are well-equipped with blackboards/whiteboards/projectors. Enough vertical classrooms are present along with classroom complex with centralized AC.As already mentioned every year the students and administration of IIT Guwahati come together to organize a number of festivals and competitions. The major festivals include Alcheringa, the annual cultural festival, Techniche, the annual techno-management festival, Udgam, the annual entrepreneurship summit and Research Conclave. Apart from these the Students of IIT Guwahati participate in the annual Inter IIT Sports Meet. Apart from these the General Championship (GC) is widely celebrated across the hostel communities in the institute, the combined score in the inter hostel meets Kriti (Tech), Manthan (Cultural) and Spardha (Sports) is used to decide the winning hostel.Clubs include Anchoring, Choreography, Fine Arts, Literary, Performing Arts, Photography, Music and the Movie Club, meeting a wide range of interests of the students of the institute. IITG also has its own radio station where we, the students are the RJs.
Hostel Facilities
Hostel facilities in IIT Guwahati comprises of single occupancy room for each and every student of IIT across all programmes. Rooms generally contains a cot, a cupboard, a bookshelf, a study table and chair, extra shelves for personal use, LAN port in each and every hostel room with high speed internet 24 x 7.The toilets and bathrooms are shared (three of each for every ten rooms on average). Every hostel has a mess, a canteen, a juice centre, a stationery shop, a library, a TV room, a sports room (for indoor sports), and laundry facilities.Although mess menu is decided by students and food vendoring contractors and menu changes every month with slight modification from earlier months to change the tastes of the taste buds and not made the mess food boring. Along with that, the mess food across all the hostels are quite standard, hygienic, plenty with buffet and self-service system and of course good quality of food. Hostel registration takes place along with semester registration and is fully online and automated. And hostel charge is more or less affordable with mess charge around 12000.00 INR per semester, electricity and water charges of 1000.00 INR per semester and hostel rent of 500.00 per semester along with few minimal accessory expenditure for humanitarian purposes.
