Remarks
My primary reason for choosing Sikkim Manipal University was that this was the best University I was getting close to my home with my JEE Mains rank. This is actually great for me as SMU is ranked 8th in India among private universities (and I always wanted to live in the hills). I checked the cut-off for the JEE Mains Score in at their website www.smu.edu.in and then applied. I think their minimum eligiblity was a Pass in (10+2) or equivalent with Physics & Mathematics as compulsory subjects and Chemistry or Computer Science or Biology as one of the optional subjects with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate. This was an easy target to meet, I think and got selected soon after in their merit list.
Course Curriculum Overview
My course curriculum is the standard CSE curriculum I think. We are taught the technical knowhow to succeed in whichever field we want to pursue keeping abreast of the ever-changing technology. Our professors also train us entrepreneurship ventures which in turn facilitates our employability. Our advisors also encourage us in the best practices of computation based on mathematics and science to address customized projects and ensure productivity in research. We are always told to work on personal projects to bolster our portfolios. We have a standard faculty student ratio and a continuous evaluation system to reinforce the concepts we learn.
Placement Experience
My department actually has a stellar record when it comes to placements. This year our seniors in the pass-out batch got placed at the best companies like Microsoft, Dell, Shell, JLL, Daikin, Boston Scientific and so on. To top it off, the packages they were offered were really good too. The highest package offered was 24 Lakhs PA by Commvault and the average is 5.2 Lacs PA which is pretty great in my opinion.
Fee Structure And Facilities
My annual fees is around 3 lakhs which means the total comes to around 12 lakhs for all four years. This is actually a bit on the higher side but I think it is a good compromise because of the quality of our education. The fees for my friends who are from Sikkim is almost half I have heard. There are a few merit cum need scholarships available too but I do not really know about their details much.
Campus Life
I think the campus is amazing. It is on the cliff side and there is the hill rise to the back. It is on the side of the the Teesta river. We have some really good courts and indoor sports spaces where we can spend time after class. We also have a few clubs here and there. On off days we can go to the mall, that is the town-centre which is really fun. We also have a few conferences and seminars scheduled throughout the year as well. We also have workshops on C, Java Animation and such all year which really boosts my skills.
