Remarks
Tezpur University is one of the best places if you want to study on a really beautiful campus. The countryside environment outside the University too, adds to the beauty of the place. And when it comes to academic affairs, TU is very serious than all other Universities in the region. The admission process starts with the Tezpur University Entrance Exam(TUEE) The department of MCJ is an excellent place if you want to explore the field more. There are numerous students from different academic backgrounds who come together at MCJ and explore their areas of interest.
Course Curriculum Overview
The curriculum of the course is advanced and almost matches with the demand required in different communication fields, say Journalism, PR, Advertisement, and so on. If you want to land in research, it's a good place to do a master's. I chose this because I want to do a Phd and TU seemed to me, the best place to be, in NE India. The faculty-student ratio is 36:1. However, at subjects that need to be chosen, the ratio drops from 15-20 students per teacher. All the teachers are PhD and well qualified. Though at times, there are certain issues with the methods adopted, MCJ Department is a place where you need to learn by doing, practicing, using laboratories, etc. The exams are generally timely.
Internships Opportunities
Different organizations accept interns from TU MCJ. Students have worked for TOI, The Hindu, Nezine, EastMojo, NENow, PTI, PCI, ONGC, OIL, AIR, etc as interns from the MCJ department. The internships, though most of them are unpaid, give a good experience to the students. However, the focus on paid internships needs to be done too. PR, Journalism, Advertising, Video production, etc. are a few broad areas where students go for internships for 6 weeks or more after Sem-2. However, if you're studying communication for development, the entire 4th-semester period is taken as an internship period where they intern with UNICEF and many other organizations.
Placement Experience
There is campus placement for different departments like MCJ, MBA, B.Tech, etc. However, there isn't 100% placement. The students at times themselves find jobs, but the Campus placement is not inclusive of all. There's a placement cell and it organizes timely workshops etc. However, the kind of placements that should have been generated does not gets generated. In the MCJ department, ETV Bharat, Teach for India, Adfactors PR, etc are some of the good placements that come. So, I'll say overall 70 % get placement, but not all of them are campus placement. In my department, I along with 2 others got placed at Adfactors PR and Will get a CTC of 4.56 lakhs after joining. The other companies give around 2, 50,000 as a starting package in MCJ. In MBA, it is higher and touches near to 4,00,000.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fees at TU are high when compared to other Govt Universities and Central Universities of the country. With admission fees of 29243(and other add-ons) and semester fees of 20943, TU is one of the costliest places to be in Govt institutes for M.A. Fees hike is prominent and hence, students at times think twice before applying to the course. The mess fees for the monthly amount from 2000 - 2300 for men and 1500-2000 for women. Students avail different government scholarships during the time, which is given on different bases. However, more scholarships are more prevalent in PhD than Masters Courses.
Campus Life
TU will undoubtedly give you one of the best campus life. Situated near the Jia Bharali river, the TU campus is full of life with vibrant colors of different emotions that range out throughout. It has got one of the best displays of nature and celebrates Autumn and spring very beautifully. Annual fests are techxetra, arnaswat, and Insignis. The library is very big and beautiful and most importantly busy, but peaceful. The department has got a subscription to a number of research journals for its students and research scholars. The classroom is digital and teaching is done in both traditional as well as digital ways. The campus has a gym, swimming, and other facilities. And in terms of the club, there are debate clubs, literary club, drama club, dog lovers group, clubs for different sports and games, etc.
Hostel Facilities
The hostels are quite good and beautiful. The rooms are clean, spacious (apart from a few hostels) and a good place to study. 24*7 power, running water, energy friendly power, sports and games facilities, common room etc are a few characteristics of the hostel in TU. Hostel food depends upon different hostels. The food in Patkai and Kanchenjunga men's hostel is better than other hostels. There are both veg and nom veg food prepared every day, in a very hygienic way. The hostels are inside the university itself. However, a big problem with the girl's hostels is the hostel in time which makes the rules gender biased. There is a shortage of hostels, especially for girls, and many times, 3 girls stay in a room for 2 ans 2 in a room for 1. Overall, the facility for hostels in TU is really good.
