My college is one of the best in my state. Also, since it is run completely by the government, the cost of education is minimum. Moreover, Bethune College is under the University of Calcutta, one the leading universities in India.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course syllabus was mostly theoretical. Although practicals spanned around a number of coding languages, the curriculum itself was more about learning than about working on a machine. My faculty, belonging to the elite class of professors attributed to be the best in the city, are actually prone to bullying the students they do not like. Sometimes, they neglect an entire batch if they don't like the students. There is a high amount of biasness that prevails among the faculty in my department. However, most of them teach well and help the students who behave according to their convenience.
Internships Opportunities
There is no particular process to get an internship. I did intern for a startup called 'Data Sutram'. I was mostly training to develop websites and worked there for a month. Since I was only just learning, I wasn't given any stipend. However, I was able to gather a lot of knowledge from the founders and the developers of the startup company.
Placement Experience
A lot of good IT companies like TCS, Wipro, and Cognizant show interest in hiring our students. However, not many of us show an active interest in working after our graduation. We mostly go for a postgraduate course before we take up a job.
College Events
My college hosts one of the biggest college fests in the city. It is known as 'Aalap'. However, the administration is not very supportive about their students participating in extracurricular activities. The students are not barred directly, but we are made to understand that this part will always take a back seat.
Fees and Financial Aid
There are scholarships like the 'Kanyashree' and 'Vivekananda Scholarship' which are awarded to meritorious students with economic incapibilities. Since it is run completely by the West Bengal government, the cost of education is inherently less and not many people have to avail the scholarships.
Campus Life
The infrastructure is not that great since it is a college that is dependent completely upon the government for everything. The toilets are left uncleaned, the labs have dysfunctional computer systems and there is no WiFi facility in the college.
Hostel Facilities
I have not opted for hostels. However, I am aware that my college has no hostel facilities. Nonetheless, there are several PGs around the premises. From my friends who stay there, I know that these PGs provide the bare minimum to survive, and charge an affordable amount.
