Remarks

The only thing that Calcutta university needs to change is its sluggish nature. The students would appreciate if the official procedures are carried out a little faster and more diligently.

Course Curriculum Overview

5

The course curriculum is designed in such a way that it is bound to acquaint its students with every bit of literature. Even if you choose to attend one text from the option and leave out the other, you will end up researching about that other one too, in order to score well in this. There are 4 semesters and a total of 8 papers in a period of two years and in each of these semesters, there's one internal exam of 10 marks for each paper and 40 marks from each of those for the main exam. What we have learnt from the course is we must perceive everything around us with a lot of keenness and in a way different than the others. Now that I am pursuing content writing this tendency to see things in a different light and unabashedly express my perception has undoubtedly helped me. There are so many other people writing about the same topic everyday. But, if I want to be noted and appreciated, my writing has to stand out and this learning is the best I could have asked for.

Placement Experience

1.5

There was no placement provided by Calcutta university for its students at least for the English department.

College Events

4

Calcutta university doesn't host any festival apart from the annual felicitation ceremony where MPhil and PhD students are honored for completing their courses. Apart from this, departmental Freshers, Farewell, teacher's day are hosted by every department individually. Also the students organize holi festival within the premises of the campus which the authority of the University doesn't interfere in.

Fee Structure And Facilities

The fees is structure is inexpensive. The payments had to be made directly through SBI bank or online mode including Debit card and Credit card. Apart from the basic admission, library and examination fees there were nothing more added. The college broke down the payments transparently and there were no latent/additional charges.

Fees and Financial Aid

Yes. Calcutta university has scholarship opportunities for its students. There are a few of them. 1) for meritorious students who secured the highest ranks in examinations. 2) to help students with weak financial background. 3) the state government's prospects of scholarship. Both the eligibility criteria and application process were very similar. If you are seeking scholarship based on merit, you will have to produce your marksheet proving the same and get the departmental HOD to review your claims. And if you want scholarship for being economically weaker, you will have to provide your family's income certificate proving that their average yearly income is less than 1lac. The average sum for merit scholarship falls between 8000-10000 for a semester and for the economic disability, 3000-3500 in a month.

Campus Life

4

The gender ratio is close to equal at the campus. And because Calcutta University has always been one of the most crucial light bearers of gender neutrality, as female students, we never felt left out. Also, let's not forget the college's open-mindedness is welcoming different ethnicities and political opinions. It never forced its students to follow a particular direction or comply with their opinions only; rather encouraged diversification to promote inclusion both inside and outside the campus. This liberty of voicing out our opinions without having to think about their repercussions is something that Calcutta University has tome and again amplified.

Hostel Facilities

3

I had to live as a PG and my average rentals were around 9000 in a month. My PG was located about 8kms away from the campus and I had to choose it because the hostel accommodation was filled by then.

Alumni/Alumna

The seniors are very helpful. They helped us widen our exposure. As a fresher I was perplexed about the university's examination and its marking system and thought I will not be able to leave my mark among such brilliant students. But, my senior helped me let go of all my inhibitions and motivated me to treat this just like any other exam. Also, he handed out the notes from last year to make my preparation easier.

Admission

I was always fond of studying literature and I have a bachelor's degree in the subject as well. Calcutta university is one of the oldest institutions not only in India but, in Asia as well and the reputation that it holds everywhere around the world cannot be denied. This made me choose this college to pursue my masters degree from. There are two ways in which you can take admission here. 1) Merit 2) entrance exam. The first option is reserved for those who have pursued their Bachelor's degree from Calcutta university but, the next option is open for everyone alike. Because my marks weren't sufficient, I had to opt for the entrance exam process and luckily ranked high after the results were announced and got selected in the first list itself. 60% of the seats are reserved for people for direct admission based on merit and the rest 40% is for students with appearing through admission test. There are about 3 or 4 more lists in both these cases after the 1st list is published, depending upon the availability of seats. The admission process starts after Calcutta university releases its results of the BA/B.Sc and B.Com examination is held through June.

Placement Experience:

Most of the placements that took place at least for the literature departments ended up with people joining educational institutes and NGOs. Very few joined corporate enterprises like Accenture. But it does provide almost a 5 LPA, if well placed. It is academically rigorous, therefore academics are weighed more than industry.

Placement Experience:

Students are eligible for applying for internships after the 3rd semester, and students can apply for placements only after 4th semester. Companies like Ericsson, Ernst and Young, JPMG makes visits our department for mostly analyst roles for economic and fundamental trading decisions. The highest offer made was 45LPA while the average is 7.5LPA. The median pakage is 8LPA. Almost 90% students secure placements after completing their degree since the Training and placement cell is pretty proactive in securing good company visits. I plan for investing and analyst roles in banking companies. I would sit for placements hoping for the same.
