Thapar University's tier positioning — this is asked a lot because Thapar occupies an unusual spot in India's engineering college hierarchy.

Short answer: Thapar is typically classified as a Tier 2 / Tier 2.5 institution — arguably the top of Tier 2.

Why Thapar stands apart from typical Tier 2:

  • NAAC A+ accreditation. Ranked ~30-50 in NIRF Engineering consistently.
  • Placement outcomes genuinely closer to lower NITs: Average CSE ~12-14 LPA, comparable to NIT Kurukshetra, NIT Jalandhar range.
  • Deemed University (not affiliated to AKTU or any state university) — this is important. Own degrees, own curriculum.
  • Industry recognition: In North India corporate ecosystem, Thapar is often mentioned alongside NITs with less ambiguity than most Tier 2 privates.

Where it sits in common comparisons:

  • Better than: VIT Vellore, SRM, most private engineering colleges for academic reputation.
  • Below: All IITs, NITs Trichy/Warangal/Surathkal (Tier 1 NITs), BITS Pilani.
  • Comparable to: Lower NITs (Jalandhar, Kurukshetra), MAIT, NSUT for some measures.

For competitive exam purposes: Thapar is often the target for students who missed NIT cutoffs but want NIT-adjacent placement outcomes. That positioning is generally justified by data.

Studied at Delhi university (2019)

One of my friends graduated from Thapar university. Here’s some information I gathered from him. There is not a right quantifier to this question, however, it can be classified into the parameters.

  • It can be considered a Tier-1 college if we look at the placement, international exposure, exchange programs, infrastructure, and many parameters of the institute.
  • It is the best private university after BITS Pilani.
  • Students studying at Thapar University are mostly from Delhi, Chandigarh, and parts of Punjab and Haryana.
  • The college campus is very clean and the infrastructure is good.
  • The hostel and food mess is maintained excellently.
  • The college has a good placement record.

However, there is a drawback because the fee structure is high. If your family is financially good enough to pay the high fees, this is a good Tier-1 college. You can also try various ways to avail the scholarship.
