News Delhi: The K J Somaiya Institute of Dharma Studies has announced the establishment of a Dalai Lama chair for Nalanda Studies. This was made possible by an endowment through the Foundation for Universal Responsibility, started by the H H Dalai Lama in 1991.

K J Somaiya Institute of Dharma Studies is inviting nominations from eminent scholars who are keen to contribute to the development of academic and research capacity in the field of Buddhism.

The chair will help with research on different topics like how Buddhists deal with today's problems, Buddhist ideas, translating Tibetan writings, comparing them with Pali and Sanskrit writings, and Tibetan art. The Centre of Buddhist Studies at the K J Somaiya Institute of Dharma Studies was inaugurated on December 6, 1993 by H H Dalai Lama. Since its establishment, the institute became a center for Buddhist studies in Maharashtra which worked in developing several programmes and multidisciplinary research.

Since 2016, the center has also engaged with the rural community near Shirdi and organized various programs like yoga, Buddhist meditation in Pali. the institute invited its nominations for the Chair. They have fixed certain criteria for a person to become a nominee.

The nominee must be experienced in teaching and research in any thematic areas. They must also have experience in the traditional Tibetan System of Monastic Education. The nominees will be chosen for a tenure of one year that may further extend to three years by mutual agreement.

The nominees shall have certain responsibilities like the Chair Professor will have to engage with students and give lectures, conduct workshops and other suitable activities in the thematic area at least for five days a month. He has to undertake research projects with one or more faculty members and publish it; he shall also engage in capacity building seminars and lectures while holding the chair.
