What do you think your roles and responsibilities to the College and the students are?

Being the Vice Principal I try to establish a multi-faceted learning atmosphere that supports student development. To enable this, I have several approaches, such as cross-disciplinary instruction, extracurricular activity involvement, as well as career guidance services, among
others. Besides, together with instructors, we shall design a curriculum that brings together theoretical understanding and practical capabilities so that learners are ready for the actual problems of life.

Any insights into how your university could be more welcoming to students of different races or economic backgrounds?

Dealing with declining enrollment is a problem that needs a fresh look. So first I researched the market to understand why students drop out and what they expect. The result of the research was used to come up with a focused marketing strategy that emphasises the distinct features and possibilities our education community has. Furthermore, I will engage closely with the admissions team to improve their process of accepting applications and give individual advice to the students. I will also work together with nearby schools as well as colleges to make sure that our college stands out to draw more students.

You have held key positions at education institutes throughout your professional career. What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

Strong leadership abilities, effective communication and collaboration with various stakeholders, as well as thorough knowledge about the learning context, are essential for a vice principal’s job. Also, an effective chancellor needs to be passionate about vision, change and learning. Such attributes are important in motivating and directing others towards educational success through teaching.

How will our college address the challenges of increasing student enrollment and retention?

To tackle the issues of increased enrollment and retention, we emphasise some factors. Firstly, I will work on strengthening the college’s esteem and visibility via robust marketing and outreach endeavours. Secondly, there will be progressive academic achievement along with student-centred support services. Moreover, we will also be establishing strong partnerships with local schools and organisations for the provision of pathways for learners.

What are the interventions and approaches you bring in apart from curriculum to train/teach the students?

I am convinced that it is important to have a nurturing environment, one that promotes cultures in a classroom setting and respects all students’ rights. Encouraging open communication as well as sharing experiences with our students by tapping into their perspectives is one way I do this. Various learning strategies coupled with diverse resources are also deployed into my teachings to cater for different learning styles within the classroom. By hiring people from different backgrounds, we ensure every learner gets an equal chance. Through sharing and participating actively in discussions, we can make certain every learner feels important and supported throughout their studies.

How is a difficult student or disruptive behavior handled in a college classroom?

Empathy is key when dealing with difficult students who exhibit disruptive behaviour. I do not expect them to conform because if their behaviour is disruptive, then there must be a reason for that. Hence it demands exceptionality, where every case must be treated uniquely but fairly. Analysing students’ backgrounds at the beginning of the semester can be important since this way they can comprehend my expectations in terms of conduct or manners that I require from them.
