What motivated you to pursue your career in academia and become an Associate Dean - School of Architecture & Planning?

As William Arthur says “Teaching is more than imparting knowledge; it is imparting change. Learning is more than absorbing facts; it is acquiring understanding” I believe a teacher has a great influence on a student’s life for their holistic development. A small change can make a big difference- this is what inspires me and this is what I aspire for! I believe that Woxsen is one of the best places to study architecture in the country. I am eager to work with faculty and staff to develop new programs and initiatives that will prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. I am also impressed by Woxsen’s commitment to ERS – Ethics, Responsibility, and Sustainability, and I believe that these are important values that should be instilled in future architects and planners.

As an Associate Dean of the School of Architecture & Planning, what do you think is the USP, or what are the differentiating factors that make Woxsen stand out from other colleges?

At Woxsen, a set of guiding pillars and principles define the institution’s vision and values. The pillars include Internationalization, Research, Corporate Alignment, ERS (Ethics, Responsibility, and Sustainability), and Entrepreneurship. These pillars form the foundation of the educational approach ensuring that the students are prepared to thrive in a rapidly evolving world. The School of Architecture & Planning successfully had an international student exchange program at different semester levels and will continue to do so. Along with the design, the students are encouraged to submit Research papers thus building the body of knowledge in architecture and its allied fields. In only 4 years, the school has had a couple of patents in the field of design (by the students) from the Government of India. The students also take part in ERS events arranged locally to foster societal impact through activities that enhance ethical behavior, community engagement, and environmental sustainability.

How does the team/Faculty of the School of Architecture work towards being updated with the latest trends and developments in the field of Architecture and incorporate them into the curriculum and programs offered by Woxsen?

Primarily, the faculty team is composed of experts/academicians from different streams of architecture and is comprised of people from different parts of the country and the world. This provides a great opportunity for the students to understand different perspectives and learn different methods adapted in different regions in the field of architecture and its allied fields. The team regularly updates itself through new courses, books, and social media regarding the latest trends and developments. This is transferred to the students through lectures, presentations, and workshops.

How would you foster a culture of innovation, creativity, and academic excellence within the School of Architecture & Planning?

Communication is the key. At WU, faculty and students are encouraged to bring forward innovative ideas. Regular innovation exercises and idea sessions are conducted to encourage “out of the box” thinking. Brainstorming sessions by industry experts are held at regular intervals for creative exposure. Additionally, the students are encouraged to participate in various design competitions at both national and international levels.

Can you describe your approach to student advising and support services, and how you would ensure students receive the guidance and resources they need for their academic and professional growth?

The students have an advisor with whom they discuss both academic and non-academic matters. The mentor is the dedicated resource for academic knowledge, experience, and insight. They actively work with the students to identify goals and create a plan for the journey. The mentors keep a tab regularly on the performance of their mentees clarifying essential program requirements and procedures. Also, sessions/ workshops are held for the students to update themselves regarding the industry and prepare accordingly.

Can you discuss your experience in curriculum development and program design within the field of architecture and planning?

Since we are aiming to be one of the top schools in architecture, curriculum plays an important role in achieving it. We are taking care not just in developing a curriculum but also practicing an effective pedagogy. Practicing architects, planners, and academicians (national & international) are on the board of studies to create a curriculum that is useful in both academics and professional work. Real-world scenarios and problem-solving activities are a part of the program. This will help students analyze their skills outside the classroom.

How would you promote experiential learning and practical application of knowledge within the School of Architecture & Planning?

The field of architecture is very practical. Only theory will not be beneficial to the students. Practical modules are conducted according to the subject where the students have hands-on experience, Site visits, case studies, and live projects further add value to their knowledge. As stated earlier, real-world scenarios and problem-solving activities are a part of the curriculum.

What kind of steps Woxsen is taking in order to bridge the gap between academia and the real industry world?

Woxsen University and its management encourage academia and the industry to engage in open dialogue and actively share knowledge. Woxsen conducts workshops, seminars, and symposiums to help disseminate ideas and insights to a broader audience fostering collaboration between academia and the industry.
