Dr. Rakesh Kumar Yogi has been working as the Dean of Faculty of Humanities at Gurugram University of Haryana. Earlier, he was associated with Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication from 2012-2021.
He has also served mainstream media houses like ETV, Janmat, Live India, India news and CNEB for 14+ years, where he successfully played diverse roles ranging from Field Reporter, Bureau Chief as well as News Editor. In addition to this, Dr. Yogi has been continuously active in writing current affairs, social issues as well as literature writing of stories , plays , poetry and ghazals from his student life.
He has also written regular columns in esteemed current affair magazines like Tahlka, Live India and Poorva Post and the street play “Naya Savera” which was written and directed by Dr. Rakesh himself won the 2nd position in Best Director category in the Udaan Mahotsav. He is the founder trustee of Dialogue Initiative Foundation, an organization which works to resolve relevant social problems through dialogue and for his research on the topic "Dialogue in Media", he has been awarded PhD. And he is still active in writing, directing and producing Documentaries and Short Films. Last but not the least, he has done Graduation in Hindi from Rajasthan University of Jaipur and Post-graduation in Mass Communication from Himachal University. He has also published numerous books including Jantantra Evam Sansadiya Samwad (Vaani prakashan), Taaki Sanad Rahe (Abhiyan Prakashan) and Rashtriya Chetna ki Kahaniya (National book trust).
What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?
I am connected to the dynamic, diverse and challenging world of education due to its profound impact on my personal and societal transformation.
Also this wonderful domain gives me constant intellectual stimulation, direct opportunity to mentor and guide students, and conduct research and innovation. So definitely, these are some of the other driving factors behind my so long association with the academic sector.
As a Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, what is your philosophy of leadership?
My philosophy of leadership revolves around empowering, mentoring and inspiring others to achieve their full potential. And I strongly believe in a collaborative way of working as it's very important to understand and value diverse perspectives, and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
Apart from this, I emphasize a lot on open, trustworthy and respectful communication, as this kind of atmosphere is the need of the hour when we deal with and lead people of different mindset, culture, experiences and skills and define long-term strategic goals. Also, my students are like my child and my aim is to create an environment where every individual feels supported, motivated, and encouraged to excel, ultimately contributing to the success of the department and the university as a whole.
What factors and features make your department different from others?
I would like students to know that our department is more than just a place of academic instruction, rather it's a community of passionate scholars and professionals committed to their success. We also offer numerous research opportunities, mentorship programs, and career development initiatives that extend beyond the classroom.
Additionally, feedback is regularly collected from concerned stakeholders including students and industry experts, to make necessary improvements in curriculum and teaching methodologies and also to enhance the overall learning experience of youths. Hence, I would say that our Humanities Department is a dynamic hub of innovation, and we regularly encourage students to engage, explore, and make the most of the diverse opportunities available to them. How is your relationship with the students of your college?
My relationship with the students of our college matters a lot to me and their success and well-being are paramount to me and our department. Hence, to create a supportive learning environment, I have maintained an open-door policy and actively communicate with them to address their concerns and provide necessary guidance to them as and when needed.
Also, I regularly collect their feedback to help us continually improve our department's offerings. Overall, through regular interactions, mentorship, academic advising, and department events, I aim to foster a sense of community and ensure that the students' experiences are as enriching as possible.
What are your key roles and responsibilities towards the department and students being the Dean?
As the Head of the Department, I am mainly responsible to provide academic leadership, ensure faculty development and students success by providing them relevant opportunities at the right time, manage college's budgets and resources and foster community engagement. Apart from this, promoting research and innovation on campus, leading strategic planning, and upholding quality standards also comes under the scope of my work.
