Prof. (Dr.) V. K. Singh has been working as the Registrar of Sarala Birla University, Ranchi, Jharkhand. He has done Graduation in Physics Honors and M.Sc in Physics from Bihar University of Muzaffarpur followed by PhD from SKMU of Dumka. He started his professional journey in 1988 at A.S. College of Deoghar which is a constituent unit of SKMU and became full- time professor in 2018. After this, he worked as Deputy Registrar at Vinoba Bhave University of Hazaribagh and Principal for 4 years at Sityog Institute of Technology of Bihar.

Being the Registrar of SBU, what is your philosophy of leadership? 

My philosophy of leadership revolves around setting examples and a positive precedent for others to follow, student satisfaction, and ensuring that no one is left behind. Hence I have defined procedures to reduce conflicts and confusion, held regular meetings with my teams, and remain open to any kinds of suggestions or feedback coming from students or teachers so that their problems can be fixed on an earliest basis. And since students' academic and non-academic requirements matter most to us, therefore we go the extra mile by conducting additional classes as and when needed to make sure everyone of them fully understands the delivered concepts.

What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

Being a Teacher in earlier years of my life, I have in-depth understanding of various types of teaching-learning processes and involved complexities. Also, for many years, I was directly involved in shaping the minds of young students as their mentor. So I would say that my past experiences and ability of being an effective leader have been very beneficial in my role as the Registrar, as it allows me to guide and support the faculty excel in their teaching pedagogies and deliver the quality education to students. 

Therefore, the driving force behind my long association with the education sector are the opportunities and capabilities to pass down the knowledge I have acquired throughout my career. Last but not the least, satisfaction of contributing to the growth and development of future generations is what motivates me to stay connected with the education sector.

Has your Sarala Birla University recently introduced any new program for its students?

Yes, recently our Sarala Birla University introduced several new programs for its students including B Pharma, D Pharma, B.Sc. Nursing, and Law. And we are actively exploring the introduction of a few other courses to successfully implement the National Education Policy 2020 and make students future ready.

What are some of the greatest strengths of SBU?

The greatest strengths of our university lies in its unwavering commitment to discipline as rather than engaging in defensive behavior, SBU timely accepts any errors that occur and takes complete responsibility for them. And this kind of attitude in return allows everyone to address mistakes with humility and a genuine desire to enhance involved processes.

How are the placement statistics of Sarla Birla University?

We have a dedicated Training and Placement Cell to take care of all kinds of recruitment activities and train students as per industry standards. And in 2023 itself, this cell had sent almost 2000 placement invitation emails to HR and reputed companies for final placement and internships of students. And it gives me immense happiness to tell you that we have received a positive response from 170+ companies. Also, close to 100 placement drives have been successfully conducted this year for 2023 batch, both in virtual and physical modes. And the overall placement percentage stood at an impressive 91.83%, with the highest salary packages of INR 9.17 LPA.

What do you think should be the University’s top priority over the next 10 years?

In the next 10 years, we aspire to see our university at par with the other Birla Institutes of repute, and make it a top choice of students nationally and internationally. And apart from quality teaching, the main priority of our university will be to promote a research-oriented environment on campus for the benefit of students. Hence to make progress in this direction, we have started PhD programs from the ensuing year and we are working hard to make this university world class so that our students may meet all upcoming challenges in the competitive world.

When you first came to SBU, what was your vision for the university and how far have you come in implementing them?

My vision when I first joined the SBU was to maintain excellence in all its academic activities and teaching methodologies. I also wanted to ensure that the university lived up to the high standards set by the Birla family and became a prominent name in the national and international arena. And it gives me immense happiness now as over time, this vision has evolved as we have made significant progress by successfully establishing a dedicated team.

How has the focus on maintaining excellence in academics shaped the growth of SBU since its inception?

In my experience, the focus on maintaining excellence in academics has been instrumental in shaping the growth and development of SBU since its inception. The university was celebrating its 2nd year when I joined it, and from that time I have observed that the Birla’s had always emphasized the importance of quality education without compromising on any aspect. And this commitment has driven us to constantly strive for improvement and has also guided our decision-making processes. As a result, we have been able to attract talented faculty, establish strong academic programs, and create a conducive learning environment for our students. 

Any suggestions which you would like to give to the current youth and aspiring students?

I would advise my dear students and aspiring youths of our society to make best use of every learning and networking opportunity provided to them. Also, carefully choose the area of study as per your interest and passion and once chosen, give your best efforts to excel in it. And in addition to focusing on the subject curriculum, explore and learn other things that are interrelated to your chosen field. All in all, develop a thorough knowledge of each subject and gain practical experience as both are essential to strengthen your skills. Last but not the least, develop a strong personality, as it plays a vital role in overall personal growth.
