Spokesperson: Dr Vaidyanathan “Vaidy” Jayaraman, Dean (UG) & Professor – Supply Chain Operations, Data Sciences & Analytics, SP Jain School of Global Management
An undergraduate degree in Business Administration provides a lot of diverse opportunities and hence a broad range of career choices. Over the past few years, BBA graduates have found jobs that include Business Analyst, Sales & Channel marketing executive, HR executive, Business consultant and entrepreneurship/small business owner.
Business Analyst – This role is focused on analyzing any organization’s systems and processes, collating data, and then analyzing it to identify gaps, make improvement and develop efficient solutions. The analyst is an important connect between the technical team and relevant stakeholders. Typical skills include proficiency in business analysis tools, optimization, process mapping and a keen knowledge of relevant methodologies.
Sales & Channel Management Executive – This role would require an executive to identify potential customers, build a strategic long-term relationship, and sell the products or services to meet any contractual targets/requirements. Anyone who wishes to pursue this career should have excellent presentation skills, be a good storyteller who can articulate the benefits of a product/service and a deep knowledge of using customer relationship management software and tools.
Marketing Executive – Unlike a sales executive, a marketing executive is responsible for developing and executing robust marketing strategies and campaigns to promote the product. They should have a deep understanding of digital marketing (including SEO SEM and social media), lead generation, advertising and brand management.
HR Executive – Responsible for overseeing the workforce that includes hiring, training and retaining employees as well as handling employee relations, benefits administration and performance management. Typical skills include an expertise in recruiting and talent acquisition, a sound understanding of conflict resolution abilities and benefits administration. Performance management and appraisal skills knowledge is also important.
Business Consultant – Any graduate with a major in operations, finance or marketing can fit this role. The main objective is to help clients improve efficiency, solve problems and provide expert advice and guidance to companies on aspects including operations, growth and strategy. The graduate should have strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, data analysis and extensive business acumen of the industry for which they act as a consultant.
Entrepreneur – There has been a distinct pattern over recent years for several graduates to start their own business and pursue any entrepreneurship opportunities. The entrepreneur/small business owner can manage small businesses in industries such as retail, e-commerce, technology, or hospitality. The “be your own boss” mentality would allow the graduates to creatively apply their skills and achieve financial independence.
A lifelong learning approach to gain relevant work experience can certainly help BBA graduates to advance and make progress in their chosen careers. Anyone with the right aptitude and a great attitude can climb to the highest altitude.
