Dr. A. Sundaravalli is the Dean of Natural and Applied Sciences and an Associate Professor at Mount Carmel College. She holds an M.Sc. degree along with a B.Ed., an M.Phil. and a PhD. Dr. Sundaravalli has worked on numerous projects, like Impact of Millet-Based Recipes on the Health Status of KREIS Schools in Bengaluru Rural: A Controlled-Study 2022-23, Development of Education Material to Educate the Adolescent Girls on the Importance of Nutrition with Special Reference to Minerals – Iron and Calcium in the Diet and Overall Health 2013-14 and A Study on the Prevalence of Osteoporosis and the Impact of Intervention Programme in Adults (>35 yrs) of DRDO Bangalore, 2009-10.

What is the vision and mission of your college in terms of providing education and preparing students for the future?

Our college believes in providing quality education with a comprehensive approach focusing on instilling values. We work towards empowering students with knowledge. Moreover, we also work with skills essential to building a society rooted in the principle of “Civilisation of Love.”


Can you describe any specific measures or programs that your institution has implemented to address the rising mental health issues and stress among students in India?

Our college’s vision is focused on providing holistic education towards the creation of our goal of a “Civilisation of Love.” True to its vision and mission, the management has overseen the implementation of efficient mentoring and counselling sessions. We also have regular value-based education, which has facilitated addressing mental health issues and dealing with stress.


What steps have you taken to promote the spirit of entrepreneurship among students?

An initiative has been set up by Mount Carmel College to foster an innovation and entrepreneurship culture among the students, faculty, and alumni. This initiative aims to enable them to transform their business ideas into reality. The centre aspires to develop individual talent, skills and personalities to give each business the best possible start, thus fostering entrepreneurship at a local and national level. The objective of the centre is to offer unique and incentivized solutions, which will encourage students and faculties to ideate and design novel solutions. The centre will provide a supportive entrepreneurial environment that accelerates the successful development of start-up companies through an array of adequate resources and services. Our main goal is to produce successful firms that will leave the centre financially viable and freestanding.

What initiatives or strategies has your college adopted to provide students with a competitive edge in the job market and help them with placements?

Workshops and hands-on training sessions are conducted by various industry experts on recent technologies at our college. Strong alumni engagement benefits students through numerous initiatives. We also invite alumni to speak as guest speakers every semester to provide career guidance. We also involve them in the evaluation of final-year internship projects.


What role do you believe co-curricular activities play in a student's education and personal development? What are some essential co-curricular activities that your Institute and how do they benefit students?

We believe co-curricular activities help in developing students’ life skills such as leadership, confidence and socialisation. The college has a wide range of co-curricular activities, ranging from cultural activities, association activities, IT club activities, theatre and public speaking and many more. These activities help the students develop social and moral skills and also share their holistic personality development.


What should be the college top priorities over the next 5 years?

Over the next five years, we will concentrate on moulding our students into individuals with values. We wish to create skill-based courses and sensitise the young generation about the subtle difference between modernization and westernisation. We will also look into guiding our students to have experiential learning and purposeful research that would directly serve their communities.
