• Classic Integrated Speaking and Integrated Writing tasks have been removed.
• New task types introduced: Complete the Words, Build a Sentence, Listen and Repeat, and Take an Interview.
• Reading and Listening sections are now multistage adaptive.
• Pure testing time reduced to approximately 1 hour 23 minutes – 1 hour 29 minutes.
• The previous 10-minute scheduled break has been removed.
• Writing and Speaking responses are scored using a combination of AI (NLP/machine learning) and ETS-certified human raters.
• Section order change: The new order is Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking (Writing moved ahead of Speaking). 

ETS has not confirmed any further structural change for 2027. The 2026 specifications apply for the full 2027 testing cycle.

TOEFL Computer-Adaptive Format and Test-Day Mechanics

The TOEFL 2027 is computer-adaptive in Reading and Listening. The adaptive engine routes candidates to a lower or upper module based on router-stage performance. Writing and Speaking stay linear across every test form.
