Why NCERT English Book is Important for Class 10 Boards
- More than 95–98% of CBSE Class 10 English board questions (2020–2025) are directly or indirectly from NCERT textbooks.
- Reading comprehension passages are now mostly taken from outside, but literature questions are completely NCERT-based.
- Textbook exercises and in-text questions often reappear on the boards (sometimes verbatim).
- Poetry devices, themes, and central ideas asked in Long Answer Questions are fully covered in the book.

NCERT Class 10 English Book: Topper’s Strategy for Board Exam
The CBSE Class 10th Topper of the session 2024–2025, Aryan Sharma, shared his own experience with the NCERT English Book on Reddit, saying, " relied 100% on NCERT First Flight and Footprints without Feet for my 2025 board exam.” Along with this, he also shared his own preparation strategy that he followed while preparing for the Class 10 Board exam:
- I read every chapter at least four to five times. First reading for story, second for understanding themes, third for extracting important lines, and fourth for textbook questions.
- All 8-mark long questions came directly from the NCERT chapters (one from ‘Nelson Mandela’, one from ‘The Proposal’, and one from ‘Bholi’). Even the extract-based questions were straight from the textbook.
- Footprints without Feet is very scoring– stories are short and interesting. I finished the entire book in 3 days and revised it 6–7 times. With this, I got 19/20 in the supplementary section.
- Poetry seems scary, but if you learn the central idea + poetic devices table given in the book, you can easily score 100%.
- I did not buy any extra guide or reference book. Only solved the previous 10 years’ board papers + sample papers from the CBSE website. All passages in the 2025 paper were new, but the question pattern was exactly like the NCERT exercises.
