NCERT Solutions for Class 10 English First Flight 9 Madam Rides the Bus Summary

  • Madam Rides the Bus, written by Vallikkannan, depicts a story of a young eight-year-old Tamil girl, Valliammai.
  • Valli was often very curious about the adventures of life and hoped to explore the world outside her house. One of her favorite past-times was standing at the doorway and keeping an eye on what happened around the street.
  • Once after consistently watching a bus crossing from her village to the nearby town, Valli became more curious.
  • She wanted to take the bus ride and explore what lay ahead. With time, she gathered enough information about the timings of the bus and the required fare amount she had to pay.
  • She gradually learned that the bus journey from her village to the nearby town was around six miles. Besides, she learned that the bus fare was 30-paise for a one-way ride. Valli began saving money to avail the ride on the bus.
  • One afternoon, while her mother was asleep, Valli took the bus ride and asked the conductor to drop her in the town.
  • She found the bus brand new with green outer and white stripes. The seats were comfortable and fancy as well. She was amused when the bus started moving.
  • Valli enjoyed the scenic beauty outside and was delighted to see a young cow running wildly and crossing the street. It was fascinating that all her dreams were coming true.
  • The conductor asked whether she wanted to roam the stalls of the town upon reaching. Valli politely declined as she needed to save enough money to return home.
  • On her way back, she noticed a dead cow and realized it was the same young cow that wildly crossed the street when she was traveling to the town.
  • Looking at the terrifying sight of a bleeding cow made her upset and helped her understand the meaning of life and death.
